Toyota has topped the JD Power 2004 Vehicle Dependability Study in America, with Lexus as the highest-ranked individual brand.

The survey measures the number of faults – in categories such as noise, vibration and harshness, driveability, dependability, and safety – occurring over a three year period. A score, indicating the number of faults per 100 cars, is used to rank individual cars and brands.

Toyota’s brands collectively experienced just 207 problems per 100 cars, with Honda in second place with 210 problems and Porsche in third with 240.

Lexus as an individual brand saw just 162 problems per 100 cars. By contrast, Land Rover, the worst performing individual brand, saw 472 problems per 100 cars.

The industry average for the year was 269.

The Big Three American manufacturers saw much improved results over last year, with DaimlerChrysler by 9 PP100 to tenth, Ford improving by 12 PP100 to eighth place, and General Motors by 2 PP100 to fourth – the only American manufacturer to rank above the industry average.

“The Domestics are putting their money where their mouths are in terms of consistent long-term quality improvement,” said Joe Ivers, partner and executive director of quality/customer satisfaction at J.D. Power and Associates.

This is the tenth year Lexus have topped the survey.
