In honour of its partnership since 2003 as Official Vehicle Supplier to Dame Ellen MacArthur and her Offshore Challenges Sailing Team, and to celebrate Dame Ellen’s magnificent sailing achievement of a new solo, non-stop round the world record of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds, Renault UK and Ellen have created the new Espace Globe Ellen MacArthur special edition.

On sale now, the new Espace Globe Ellen MacArthur (GEM) is only available in the UK and was designed just for UK drivers. MPV buyers with a similarly active approach to life as Ellen can now choose a car she designed for her needs.

Espace GEM is available with three engines, one petrol and two diesels. The 2.0 16V 140hp petrol engine is priced at £21,995. The 1.9 dCi 120hp version is £22,995 whilst the popular 2.2 dCi 150hp costs £24,495 with the automatic 2.2 dCi Auto 150hp at £25,995.

The additional equipment fitted to Espace Globe Ellen MacArthur is worth a massive £3,300 making it outstanding value for money. Prices are up by only £545 compared to the Expression version giving extra value to the amount of £2,755.

Dame Ellen MacArthur herself drives a top-of-the-range Espace whilst on land needing a car that can take her and the team long distances in comfort and safety, then, at her destination, could be moving around vast amounts of equipment and supplies. Now, Ellen will be driving the very car created by her and Renault UK in her name!

Having driven the new Espace for two years Ellen knew the features that made life better when she is behind the wheel. Espace Globe Ellen MacArthur is designed to reflect these qualities – the car is ultra spacious inside, light and airy and is packed full of technology, just like Ellen’s famous B&Q trimaran is. Even the standard colour reflects the ocean, coming in navy blue!

Ellen MacArthur certainly approves of the new special edition’s name. “Globe’s kind of appropriate isn’t it?” says Dame Ellen having recently returned from her circumnavigation of it. “At the sea my trimaran does the work but leave the cars to tackle the land based stuff!”.

Espace Globe Ellen MacArthur is as unique as the person herself with new items of equipment and recognisable by the specific tailgate badging incorporating Globe and Ellen MacArthur’s signature.

Based on the popular Expression trim additional equipment includes a new feature for Espace – a fixed glass panoramic roof with electric sunblind. Covering two thirds of the roof, as an opening sunroof this is a popular option but customers told Renault they love looking through it and the light it brings, but with air conditioning as standard, they never open it. The new fixed roof therefore doesn’t open and reduces the cost.

One feature Ellen said was essential was the Carminat Satellite Navigation System with colour screen and real time traffic TMC messaging, normally a £1,600 option.

Ellen says, ‘It’s cool to have the GPS. It’s absolutely essential on the boat. Driving through big cities though is always a challenge and you can’t have a map book out in the car when you’re on your own. So the sat’ nav’ is invaluable.”

When Ellen is not listening to the sound of crashing waves then music is important so a powerful 160W auditorium hi-fi with boot mounted six CD multi-changer, an RDS radio with remote control is fitted, normally a £450 option.

Ellen’s car has to work for a living just like any family car so one essential is the roof bars which when not being used aid the aerodynamics of the car by forming a rear roof spoilers.

Other special features include 17″ Hurlingham wheel stylers, folding blue-tinted electric mirrors for those tight spots, anti-pinch front & rear electric windows with added one-touch feature, upholstery and standard Navy Blue paint or five optional metallic paint colours. Cruise control, with speed limiter, is also standard on the automatic versions though it’s fair to say that Ellen would never have used a speed limiter on her B&Q trimaran!

There are also three option packs that have also been created especially for Espace GEM offering customers even more choice on top of the already impressive list of standard features at even more value-for-money with savings of up to £200 available on each pack.

The ‘Driving Pack’ and ‘Communication Pack’ are only available on manual versions of the car. ‘Driving’ includes parking proximity sensor, cruise control/ speed limiter and tyre pressure monitor priced at £550 (saving the customer £200).

The ‘Communication Pack’ (manual cars only) includes hands free telephone system and cruise control/ speed limiter at £550 (a saving of £100).

Finally the ‘Travel Pack’ costs £650 and includes hands free card, swivelling front seats, opening tailgate window and electrochrome rear view mirror & auto wipers & auto wipers (& “follow-me home” headlights) (saving £200).

New Espace Globe Ellen MacArthur Special Edition is on sale now from £21,995 rising to £25,995.
