At the Geneva Motor Show this week, SEAT unveiled its first SUV, the Ateca.

It’s named after a Spanish town, and the company says it has been 100% designed and developed in Barcelona.  Not VW-parent’s home of Germany.

Perhaps because of that, we think they’ve done an excellent job of it.

Brace yourself for some marketing-speak from Dr.Matthias Rabe, Executive Vice President for Research and Development: “The Ateca shows a clear evolution of SEAT’s characteristic design language and the Ateca also stands for emotion and functionality. This car offers outstanding off-road capabilities and guarantees an exceptional driving experience in all kinds of conditions with perfect traction. The Ateca also includes innovative technology, for example in terms of lighting and connectivity.”

He’s talking about the fact the Ateca will be available with full LED headlights, although these will be optional, while the connectivity reference is backed up by a whole slew of buzzwords: MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

We’re pleased to see that SEAT will be offering the option of wireless smartphone charging for the first time, too.

From launch, the Ateca will be offered with a range of engines with outputs from 115 to 190PS, in both two- and all-wheel-drive configurations, and with either manual or dual-clutch transmissions.

Diesel options start with a 115PS 1.6 TDI, while a 2.0 TDI will be available with either 150PS or 190PS.  Fuel economy ranges from 56 to 66 mpg, with CO2 emissions of between 112 and 131 g/km.

Petrol options begin with a 1.0 TSI with 115PS, while a 150PS 1.4 TSI makes use of cylinder deactivation to improve economy.  Figures range from 46 to 53 mpg, and 112 to 131 g/km.

A raft of driver aids and safety systems will also be offered, such as Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Top View Camera, and more.

A new feature – Traffic Jam Assist – operates at speeds of up to 37 mph, and can steer, accelerate and brake automatically to make life in stop-start traffic less wearing.

The new SEAT Ateca will make its UK showroom debut this September.

Prices are expected to start from £17,990.
