After months of build-up, the new Jaguar XE has finally been unveiled in full.
It goes on sale in the UK in 2015 with prices set to start from around £27,000.
To begin with, however, Jaguar has only released details of the high-performance XE S model which is set to top off the range.
It’s powered by a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine taken from the Jaguar F-Type that produces a very enticing 340PS and 450Nm of torque.
Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the XE S is capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.
In terms of economy, the XE S will achieve 33.9mpg on the EU combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 194 g/km.
Other models will follow later, powered by 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines with either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions.
The diesel models are expected to be particularly frugal with the forthcoming 163PS unit achieving economy figures of 75mpg together with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km.
Some of this efficiency stems from Jaguar’s use of aluminium in key areas, with the company stating that the new XE is the lightest, stiffest and most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built. Indeed, the company quotes a drag coefficient figure of just 0.26 for the new XE.
The new XE is the first new model to use Jaguar’s new modular architecture, while the suspension systems make use of a double wishbone set-up at the front – traditionally more expensive than the usual MacPherson strut configuration – as well as a new ‘integral link’ rear set-up. Both make extensive use of aluminium in their construction to reduce weight.
Also new is an electric power steering system – the first time an electric system has been used on a Jaguar – that the company says offers CO2 emissions reductions of up to 3% without sacrificing steering feel or response.
A new InControl infotainment system will arrive with the new XE, controlled via an eight-inch colour touch-screen and providing a range of functions compatible with iOS and Android smartphones.
A new Meridian hi-fi system will be available, while a laser head-up display (HUD) will project information such as vehicle speed and route guidance directly onto the windscreen.
Jaguar’s new electronic safety systems that use stereo cameras to allow the car to ‘see’ objects and road signs, activating the brakes as necessary, will also make an appearance on the new XE.
Full details of the new XE will be announced at the Paris Motor Show next month, although Jaguar did confirm that the new XE will go on sale in 2015 with prices expected to start from around £27,000.
