Alpina has launched the new E65-based B7 in the UK, its challenger for the title of World’s Fastest Production Saloon Car.

Launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the B7 is based on the BMW 7 series.

Alpina engineers have tuned the 4.4-litre V8 power unit to provide 500bhp and 516lb/ft of torque – enough to propel the two-ton saloon to 60mph in 4.8 seconds and on to a 186mph top speed.

The use of Alpina’s Nautilus-type compressor is chiefly responsible for the power hike, which also sees fuel economy rise to 22.1 mpg and an improvement in emissions.

The B7 features a 6-speed fully automatic transmission, with F1-style gear change paddles on the steering wheel.

As with most BMWs, Alpina will equip the B7 interior to each customer’s individual requirements.

The price? £76,900 on the road.
