Audi has launched a new five-door Sportback version of its A3.
Available from September, the new Sportback is built on the same platform as the three-door A3, but uses a new body shell design that features Audi’s new front grille design and allows for greater passenger and luggage space.
The new shape is 68mm longer than the three-door and provides a seats-lowered capacity of 1,120 litres.
Power comes from a range of familiar engines, although a new 2.0-litre FSI petrol unit with 200PS and 280Nm of torque from just 1,800 rpm will top the range off with performance of 150mph and 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds.
Other engines include the 1.6 FSI and 250PS 3.2 V6 petrol units, as well as a torquey 2.0 TDI with 140PS. Transmissions are five or six speed manuals, optional six-speed tiptronic automatic or the semi-automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). The quattro four-wheel-drive system will also feature on some models.
Three trim levels will be available – standard, SE and Sport – with an extensive list of options including a two-part Open Sky glass sunroof system which will enable much of the roof section to be retracted for maximum fresh air (from 2005).
Prices and exact specification for UK models will be announced nearer the September launch.
