The fifth-generation Colt goes on sale in September, priced from £8,999 to £12,499.

It’s the first full product of the Mitsubishi/DaimlerChrysler tie-up (although this looks more shaky now) and will be built at Mitsubishi’s NedCar plant in Holland.

The Colt will be powered by a range of four engines (1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 petrol plus 1.5 direct injection diesel), with the choice of five-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed AllShift AMT automated manual transmission.

Four models will be available – Classic, Equippe, Elegance and Sport. Standard equipment includes driver and passenger front airbags, ABS with EBD, central locking, 15-inch alloy wheels, CD stereo, colour-coded bumpers, alarm and immobiliser.
