The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is now available with a Euro 4 compliant diesel engine in the form of the S 320 CDI, priced from £50,965.

The EU 4 specification saves business users three per cent per annum on company car tax.

Its 88 litre fuel tank and 36.7mpg economy on the combined cycle helps the latest specification S-Class cover over 850 miles on a single fill of diesel – that’s London to Edinburgh and back.

The change from EU 3 to EU 4 specification is thanks to the addition of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and changes within the S-Class engine management. This new breed of filter manages to hold and burn particles without the need for expensive and cumbersome fuel additives. This is an important advance since the additive-based solutions can create particle build-up within the filter and increase back-pressure within the exhaust system, which would reduce economy and performance whilst increasing emissions.

The Mercedes-Benz DPF is regenerated on an ‘active control’ basis, when needed. Sensors within the engine management system adjust the temperature within the DPF and particulates are burnt-off, cleaning the DPF. Compared to high mileage vehicles with additive-based systems, the Mercedes-Benz developed DPF reduces ash residues by as much as 75 per cent.

Prices start at £50,965 for the S 320 CDI Saloon, or £53,685 for the S 320 CDI Limousine.
