The new Mercedes A45 AMG is available to order now, priced from £37,845, with first deliveries expected in August.  The first AMG with fewer than six cylinders is also the first production car to achieve 181 hp per litre.

Powered by a hand-built four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing an incredible 360 hp at 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 2,250 and 5,000 rpm, it can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds.

That power is delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission.

Despite the epic power output, the Mercedes A45 AMG is still capable of returning 40.9 mpg on the combined cycle and, with CO2 emissions of 161 g/km, only costs £175 a year in road tax.

The AMG A-Class has the looks to back-up the performance, with bespoke AMG bumpers front and rear with a full complement of air dams, splitters and diffusers.  There’s a choice of eight colours and three alloy wheel designs in either 18- or 19-inch sizes.  An optional AMG Aerodynamics package is available for £1,530 which adds a larger front splitter and a rear aerofoil.  A performance exhaust (£510) with four tailpipes is also available.

Inside, there are AMG Performance seats with nappa leather and red stitching, a sports steering wheel with metal paddle shifters, red seat belts, carbon weave dashboard trim and AMG badging.
