New Kia pro_cee’d GT on sale 1 July priced from £19,995

The new Kia pro_cee’d GT, powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 201 bhp and 265 Nm of torque, goes on sale in the UK on 1st July with prices starting from £19,995.

The direct-injection 1.6-litre power unit can propel the GT to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and on to a 143 mph top speed.  It’s a turbocharged version of Kia’s Gamma engine, and boasts 265 Nm of torque available from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm.  In-gear acceleration is said to be the car’s strong point, with 37 to 60 mph in fourth gear despatched in just 5.4 seconds, and 50 to 75 mph in fifth gear in only 7.3 seconds.  Fuel economy on the combined cycle is 38.2 mpg while CO2 emissions are 171 g/km, placing it in Band H with a £200 road tax bill.  The engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission with revised ratios and a lower final drive in comparison to standard models.

The suspension has been retuned, with increased damper rates, stiffer springs and bushes, and larger rear anti-roll bars.

The steering has also been revised to offer more feel, and the Flex Steer function – which allows the selection of three different levels of power assistance – has been removed from the GT.

Brake discs have been increased in size to 300 mm ventilated at the front and 262 mm at the rear.

Styling wise, the GT features a wider front bumper and air dam and additional cooling grilles, gloss black inserts for the ‘ice cube’ LED daytime running lights and foglights, and gloss black grille mesh, and a subtle GT badge.  The rear receives a new diffuser, dual exhausts, LED tail-lights and GT badge on the tailgate.  Sill extensions, red brake calipers and 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres complete the look.

Inside, part leather/suede Recaro seats are used the first time in a Kia, with red stitching, Recaro and GT logos and power lumbar adjustment.  The red stitched theme continues on the steering wheel, gear knob and door trims.  Stainless steel pedals and kick plates, a gloss black finish to the air vent surrounds, console tray and door trims and various GT logos add to the sporty theme.  The instrument cluster gains an LCD display which can display the car’s speed, torque output, boost pressure, coolant temperature and trip information, with a GT button on the steering wheel used to switch between the various modes.

Two trim levels are available – GT and GT Tech – with a GT 1st Edition limited to 500 examples worldwide (only 50 are coming to the UK) to celebrate the GT’s launch.

All models receive air conditioning, cruise control, speed limiter, automatic headlights, cornering lights, reversing sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, folding mirrors and privacy glass as standard.

The GT Tech model adds a seven-inch touch-screen with satellite navigation, full European mapping and UK post code recognition, reversing camera, heated front seats and steering wheel, engine start/stop button, rain sensing wipers, dual-zone air conditioning, automatically dimming rear-view mirror, and adaptive xenon headlights in place of the GT’s cornering lights.

The GT 1st Edition is based on the GT Tech model, but adds gloss black inserts to the 18-inch alloy wheels, gloss black door mirror casings, electric sunroof, red ambient lighting, custom floor mats, and numbered GT illuminated sill plates.

Three colours are available: Track Red, Fusion White metallic and Phantom Black.

The three-door model will be followed in early 2014 by a GT version of the five-door Kia cee’d.
