Japanese car manufacturer Honda have been known for many years for bringing us some of the safest and most reliable cars on the roads, but now they have one more reason to be cheerful: the new Honda CR-V, built right here in the UK, has been awarded the highest safety ratings by Euro NCAP, making it one of Europe’s safest vehicles to date.
Honda consistently bring us breakthrough vehicles in terms of safety performance, and of their modern fleet, every single model has achieved the five-star rating in Euro NCAP’s tests. That includes the Jazz, the Civic, the Accord, the Insight, the CR-Z and now these safety-conscious vehicles have been joined by their bigger brother, the Honda CR-V. What is the Euro NCAP safety rating system?
The law requires that all vehicles pass certain basic safety criteria before being brought to market. However, these are minimum standards in terms of safety and by no means represent the limits of modern car safety features. Euro NCAP independently test new cars and award them a rating of one-to-five stars based on their performance in their own tests. The areas considered by NCAP are:
- Adult occupant protection
- Child occupant protection
- Pedestrian protection
- Safety assist
The tests performed assess the safety of vehicles in a range of situations, using crash test dummies, slow-motion cameras and intelligent materials to assess how a vehicle performs in a given situation. Tests they carry out include:
- Frontal impact
- Car-to-car side impact
- Pole side impact
- Child protection
- Pedestrian protection (for both adult and child pedestrians)
- ESC (electronic stability control)
- Seat belt reminders
- Speed assistance systems
Taking into account the results of these tests, the vehicle is awarded a one-to-five star rating for each of the four areas of consideration, and then is given an overall score based upon the averages of these scores.
The Honda CR-V
The rating achieved by the Honda CR-V is a testament to Honda’s commitment to better safety for everyone. Scoring top marks in every area under investigation, the CR-V scored an impressive 93 per cent overall, making it one of the safest cars for drivers in Europe today.
Honda have set themselves a goal to ensure the safety not only of the drivers of their vehicles, but also of the passengers and pedestrians too, and with this latest outstanding test result to add to their stable, it looks like they might just have got it right.
The CR-V comes with a number of safety features as standard, which have enabled the car to secure this highest award from the Euro NCAP testers. These include:
- The Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS)
- The Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) in the body structure
- Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
- Traction control
- Emergency stop system
- Whiplash mitigation system
- Pedestrian protection
If you are looking for a new car that’s proven to be the best in its class for safety, and which also comes with the power, performance and economy you need, the CR-V has made itself the obvious choice.
