The Fiat 500L Trekking is available to order now, with prices starting from £17,095.

Although styled with an eye to the outdoors, the Trekking does not feature a dedicated four wheel-drive system, instead managing with Fiat’s new Traction+ technology to improve traction on slippery terrain.

The system uses the ABS and ESC components to simulate a mechanical locking differential, by applying the brakes to a spinning wheel, thereby transferring torque to the wheel with better grip.  It’s activated by a button on the dashboard, and operates at speeds of up to 19 mph.

The 500L Trekking is also the first car in the Fiat range to benefit from the company’s new City Brake Control system.

Using laser impulses and a sensor behind the windscreen, the car can detect its distance from other obstacles.  If the system believes a collision is unavoidable, the brakes are applied automatically.  It operates at speeds between 3 and 19 mph, so as to avoid embarrassing incidents while parking.

City Brake Control also provides additional functions: Prefill primes the braking system if an obstacle is nearby, while Brake Assist sharpens the brake pedal’s response to achieve maximum braking in an emergency.

Based on the 500L Lounge specification, the new Trekking model costs £700 more, but adds 17-inch alloy wheels with mud and snow tyres, 13mm higher suspension, privacy glass, specific front and rear bumpers, fog lights, side skirts and mouldings, as well as additional air intakes, and a pseudo skid-plate to enhance its outdoorsy character.

Inside, there’s a new seat fabric with ‘eco-leather’ inserts, and a choice of two colour combinations: magnesio grey fabric with brown leather inserts or black fabric with white inserts.

The new Fiat 500L Trekking is available with a choice of seven body colours including New Age Cream, Bossa Nova White, Dark Wave Black, Heavy Metal Grey, Opera Red, Beatbox Green and a brand new colour,  Hip Hop Yellow, which is unique to the new Trekking model.  There’s also a choice of roof colour.

Engines are the same as the standard 500L – two petrol, and two diesel.
