Detroit Electric SP:01 final specs revealed

Revived car manufacturer, Detroit Electric, has revealed the final designs and specifications for its Lotus-based pure electric sports car, the SP:01, which is due to enter production early this year.

The SP:01 will be offered in two forms – Pure and Performance – powered by 204hp or 286hp electric motors respectively.

Pure models accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds, while the Performance SP:01 achieves the same sprint in 3.7 seconds, helping Detroit Electric towards its goal of producing the fastest electric two-seater.

Both models take their power from a 37 kWh lithium-ion battery which is said to offer a range of up to 179 miles.  Top speed is quoted as 155 mph.

Since the SP:01 was originally unveiled in 2013, the car has undergone a series of changes, including the adoption of a new fastback design, plus a new underfloor diffuser to reduce lift and increase stability at higher speeds.

The company says a number of customisation options will be available from launch, such as a carbon-fibre rear spoiler, carbon-fibre diffuser and a carbon-fibre battery cover.  As well as the usual exterior paint options of black, blue, green, orange, silver, white and red, the SP:01 can be ordered in a custom colour of your choice.

The interior is dominated by the company’s SAMI (Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment) interface, controlled via an 8.4-inch touch-screen in the centre stack.  The Android-based system provides the interface for the heating and ventilation controls, plus navigation, music and vehicle status.

The system can also provide remote access to various vehicle functions through a smartphone, such as control of the charging system, climate settings and access to telemetry data.

The company hopes these functions can be further expanded by providing access to the system for third-party app developers.

Interior appointments include the choice of leather or Alcantara seats in all-black or with body-colour accents, plus electric windows, ambient lighting and customisation options for the door panels, door sills and dashboard surfaces.

The SP:01 is due to start production at Detroit Electric’s Leamington Spa facility early this year, with sales in Asia, Europe and North America slated for next year.
