Citroen has launched the C3 Stop & Start in the UK with a special introductory offer.

The C3 Stop & Start promises to slash urban fuel bills by up to 15% whilst also reducing emissions, all for a special launch price of under £10,000.

The C3 Stop & Start introduces new technology which automatically switches the 1.4 litre 90hp petrol engine off whenever the vehicle comes to a halt, helping to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.

When testing the vehicle in Paris, Citroen engineers recorded a 15% reduction in urban fuel consumption, while an independent test carried out in the UK returned a staggering 27%* improvement. Savings will vary journey by journey depending on the level of congestion and the amount of time the car spends stationary during a particular trip, which research showed can be as high as 30% of the time.

Operating the C3 Stop & Start couldn’t be simpler. The system stops the engine a split second before the car comes to a standstill and then almost silently restarts it in just 400 milliseconds – twice as quickly as a traditional starter motor and even more quietly – the moment the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal, allowing the driver to accelerate away as normal.

The secret behind this latest technology is a reversible alternator that acts as a standard alternator one minute – driven by the engine to charge the battery – but, when required, also acts as a starter motor, driven by the battery to effortlessly re-start the engine. And for those who wish to, the system can be easily deactivated via a button on the dash.

The C3 Stop & Start has been carefully specified to suit the needs of urban motorists, with the standard fitment of parking sensors to help avoid unnecessary bumps in the tightest of city spaces, as well as automatic air conditioning to maintain a pleasant cabin temperature. And the SensoDrive gearbox, with paddle-shift gearchange, does away with a clutch pedal to offer the convenience of an automatic as well as the driving pleasure of a manual.

Front armrests, a CD player, a height/reach adjustable steering wheel, automatic activation of the headlamps and rain sensitive wipers all combine to ensure high levels of occupant comfort and driver convenience. The safety and security specification includes ABS, EBD, EBA, four airbags and automatic door and boot locking.

Official government fuel consumption figures are 40.9 mpg on the urban cycle, 57.6 on the extra urban and 49.6 mpg on the combined, while CO2 emissions of just 135 g/km ensure that company car drivers will face a low benefit in kind tax charge. When it comes to performance, the 1.4 litre engine is capable of a top speed of 112 mph while accelerating from rest to 62 mph in 13 seconds.

With a recommended retail price of £11,445, which is reduced further by the availability throughout December of a £1,500 cashback offer, the C3 Stop & Start carries no price premium over the 1.4i SX model, with optional parking assistance, which it replaces.
