Citroen has announced prices for its new C4 range, which starts at £11,095.

The new C4 sees the return of Citroen’s trademark quirky styling, as well other innovative touches. There’s a new steering wheel with controls mounted on a non-rotating central boss, and an inbuilt air freshener, among others.

Priced start from £11,095 for the three-door 1.4i 16V VT and run up to £18,395 for the range topping five-door 138hp 2.0HDi Exclusive.

There are twenty two variants, including a choice of eight engines as well as dramatically different three-door coupé and five-door hatchback versions.

The C4 is the first all-new Citroën to feature the Company’s new corporate look. The front end features the boomerang headlamp design and chrome double chevron grille first seen on the revised C5, and nearly all models come fitted with alloy wheels.

The five-door hatchback features a curvier design with wrap-around tail-lights and a panoramic sunroof.

The three-door coupe, however, has a long, swooping roofline that arcs right back from the windscreen pillar to the sharply angled rear where it drops almost vertically, the rear screen forming both part of the roof line and the vertical tailgate. The shape allows a drag coefficient of just 0.28 for the coupé – the same as for the Porsche 911 Carrera.

On the inside, quality receives a boost with soft-feel materials, while push-open drawers within the dashboard operate with a damped action.

The unique design of the steering wheel, which features a fixed central hub around which are located key controls, not only frees up the dashboard but ensures that most of the essential controls are placed close to the driver’s fingertips. Using such a wheel design has also enabled Citroën to shape the driver’s airbag to more closely match that of the driver’s body.

The dashboard also features an easy-to-read translucent digital display, which is readable in all light conditions, including bright sunshine, thanks to its sophisticated technology that adjusts to the prevalent lighting conditions.

Models equipped with air conditioning also boast a built-in air freshener. Customers can select from a choice of nine scents and, by slotting a cartridge into the diffuser next to the air vent, can ensure that their car matches their mood.

The new C4 will also offer Citroen’s Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), a device that uses sensors to detect if the car is drifting across lanes, maybe because of driver tiredness or a loss of concentration. If the indicators have not been activated and the car’s speed is above 50mph, the system alerts the driver via a vibrating mechanism in the seats.

Cruise control and a speed limiter are standard across the C4 range, with other equipment such as directional Xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors with both audible and visual warnings, automatic headlamps, rain sensitive automatic windscreen wipers and tyre pressure detectors also available.

A choice of Citroën’s NaviDrive system or Bluetooth technology offers the convenience of voice activation and hands-free use of the mobile phone, while an optional Hi-Fi system developed with JBL features nine speakers with an amplifier and a subwoofer in the boot.

There are six airbags as standard, as well as ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Emergency Braking Assistance. Many models also feature the latest Electronic Stability Programme with Traction Control.

The C4 is also available with laminated acoustic side windows, as part of a security pack that also adds an alarm, which is standard on Exclusive and VTS models. Offering enhanced security, safety and refinement, the fitting of laminated side windows makes the C4 tough to break into, while minimising exterior noise to help make the cabin a calm and relaxed place to be.

Within the choice of 22 models, there are four trim levels – the LX, SX, VTR Plus and Exclusive hatchbacks being matched by the VT, VTR, VTR Plus and VTS coupé models. When it comes to engines, the petrol options include 1.4i 16V and 1.6i 16V units as well as three 2.0i 16V versions delivering between 138hp and 180hp. For lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, buyers may opt for one of the diesels – a 92hp 1.6HDi, a 110hp 1.6HDi or a 138hp 2.0HDi.
