Alfa Romeo has unveiled what it is billing as a ‘design preview’ of the forthcoming 4C Spider, the soft-top version of the Alfa 4C Coupe.

It also marks the debut of a proper set of headlights that we hope will find their way on to the Coupe.

Engineering changes required to retain structural rigidity after the removal of the roof have added around 60kg in weight, but Alfa is adamant the handling has not been compromised.

Power comes from the same 1750 turbocharged petrol engine with 240hp that drives the rear wheels via a six-speed TCT dual-clutch transmission.

The 0-62mph time is said to be identical to that of the coupe – 4.5 seconds – while the top speed is quoted as ‘in excess’ of 155mph.

In the 4C Spider, the engine breathes through a new central exhaust system designed by Akrapovic.

Completing the 4C Spider’s look are new alloy wheels milled from a solid block of aluminium and a new three-layer gloss white paint.
