The new versions of the best-selling DS 3 and DS 3 Cabrio have been unveiled, continuing the efforts by parent company Citroen to establish DS as a stand-alone brand, a move kick-started by the DS 5.
The new DS 3 will be of particular interest to British buyers, as more DS 3s were sold in the UK than in any other market – even France.
Since its launch in 2010, the DS 3 has proved to be the most popular offering in the DS range, with 390,000 units sold worldwide.
The new 2016 DS 3 features a number of styling revisions that fit within the brand’s ethos of ‘avant-garde design’.
The most noticeable of which are the appearance of the chrome ‘DS Wings’ either side of the front grille, flanked by an alluring pair of headlights that feature a combination of LED and Xenon units to create a unique light signature at night, while offering impressive illumination levels.
These are joined by LED fog lights, sequential indicators and – at the rear – 3D-effect tail-lights.
Personalisation continues to be a strong-point of the new DS 3, with 78 body and roof combinations, ten roof decals for the hatchback, four fabric roofs for the Cabrio, and a range of options for mirror caps, dashboard and gear knob.
Inside, there’s a new 7-inch colour touch-screen that presides over the car’s functions. In fact, the company says there are 20 fewer buttons on the dashboard than the previous model as a result.
The system provides MirrorLink and Apple CarPlay connectivity, while a MyDS smartphone app allows owners to keep an eye on their fuel economy, service schedule, parking location, and other functions.
A DS Connect Box will also be available that adds an SOS & Assistance Pack, providing emergency assistance calls, a Monitoring Pack, described as a virtual maintenance manual, a Mapping Pack, which can provide alerts when a vehicle enters or leaves a particular area, and a Tracking Pack that can transmit the car’s location to the police in the event of a theft.
Active City Brake can provide emergency braking to a stop at speeds up to 18 mph, while front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera are all available.
Seven engines will be available in the UK – three PureTech three-cylinder petrol units, two THP turbocharged four-cylinder petrols, and two BlueHDi diesels.
Emissions are said to range from 87 g/km to no more than 129 g/km.
A new DS Performance model will also be available – it’s powered by a 1.6-litre THP petrol engine developing 208hp and 300Nm of torque.
It features a six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox with a Torsen limited-slip differential, 15mm lowered suspension, wider tracks (by 26mm at the front, 14mm at the rear), and larger brake discs (323mm front, 249mm rear) with Brembo calipers.
Visually, it wears a twin tail-pipe, carbon side mouldings, and matt black wheel-arch extensions, while the interior gains leather and Alcantara bucket seats, with embroidered DS Performance logos.
Four body colours will be offered – Polar White, Shark Grey, Perla Nera Black and Sport Red – with either a black or white roof for the hatchback.
A Performance Black grade will also be offered, with matt black paintwork and gold highlights.
The first cars will arrive at dealerships towards the end of February, although DS Performance models will begin production in April, and will therefore follow slightly later than other models.
Prices start at £13,995 for the DS3 hatchback, with the DS3 Cabrio priced from £16,295. The DS3 Performance starts from £20,495.
