The Subaru Forester has received a round of changes for the 2015 model year, not the least of which is the arrival of the company’s Lineartronic CVT auto as an option for the diesel-powered models.
We’re fans of Subaru’s 2.0-litre 148PS ‘Boxer’ diesel engine, but until now it had only been available with a six-speed manual gearbox.
For 2015, however, the diesel can be specified with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT as an option, a combination that had previously only been offered in the Outback.
Subaru says the CVT unit has been revised for 2015 with greater attention paid to sound-proofing, and in the Forester the Lineartronic transmission is offered with a set of seven ‘gears’ to allow drivers to exercise a degree of manual control.
The diesel engine itself has also benefited from a few changes, with a new, more precisely-controlled common-rail injection system, new glow plugs for faster starting, revised turbocharger parameters, plus a new radiator, fans, and oil cooler to improve cooling efficiency.
The changes result in a 2 g/km reduction in CO2 emissions to 148 g/km for manual models (although it stays in VED Band F), while the 0-62mph sprint drops to 9.8 seconds (down from 10.2); economy remains at 49.6 mpg. Lineartronic models record 46.3 mpg on the combined cycle, with emissions of 158 g/km placing it in VED Band G.
The interior, too, has seen a number of revisions, most notably the arrival of a new infotainment and navigation system that replaces the aftermarket Pioneer system that we’ve often complained about.
The system is standard on XC, XC Premium and XT models and is controlled via a seven-inch colour touch-screen that responds to smartphone-style swiping and pinching gestures.
The rest of the cabin has received a few tweaks, with upgraded trim in places, more tactile heater controls, and an additional USB port.
XT Turbo models gain a turbo boost gauge for the dash-top multifunction display, while all models benefit from additional sound-proofing under the bonnet.
The exterior is largely unchanged, with the exception of a new shark-fin antenna that replaces the traditional pole type.
The revised Subaru Forester goes on sale in the UK on 1st April 2015, priced from £24,995.
