The new Renault Twingo is officially on sale in the UK now, with prices starting from £9,495.

Three versions will be available – Expression, Play and Dynamique – with a choice of two engines: a new 1.0-litre 70hp SCe three-cylinder and a 0.9-litre 90hp TCe three-cylinder turbo.

The Twingo is unusual in that it has five-doors and is both rear-wheel-drive and rear-engined.

Economy is expected to be a strong point, with the SCe 70 engine recording up to 67.3mpg and emitting 95-105 g/km of CO2, while the more powerful TCe 90 unit achieves 65.7mpg and emits 99 g/km.

Not surprisingly, the TCe is the more rapid of the two, its 135Nm of torque (up from the SCe’s 91Nm) enough for a 10.8 second 0-62mph time (the SCe takes 14.5).

Standard equipment on all new Twingo models includes body-coloured bumpers, door handles, door mirrors and roof spoiler, LED running lights, electric power steering, electric front windows, remote locking, height-adjustable steering column, electronic stability control, hill start assist and even tyre pressure monitoring.

The Play model adds air conditioning, height-adjustable driver’s seat, and 16-inch two-tone wheel trims.

Dynamique versions gain 15-inch alloy wheels, shoulder decals, front foglights, heated door mirrors, cruise control, leather steering wheel, white instruments, lane departure warning, and additional interior storage pockets.

Options include an electric fabric sunroof, rear parking sensors, premium sound system, plus a handful of option packs.  For instance, the Seat Pack adds heated front seats and additional ISOFIX mountings, the Techno Pack adds navigation and connectivity systems plus a rear-view camera, while the Convenience Pack includes climate control plus automatic lights and wipers.

A range of personalisation options will be available, such as contrasting colours for the interior and exterior trim, plus a Sport Pack for the range-topping Dynamique TCe 90 model that adds 16-inch alloy wheels, side decals, red/black part-leather upholstery, and aluminium pedals.

Although the new Twingo is 10mm shorter than the previous model, it has a 12cm longer wheelbase and – says Renault – 22cm more cabin room as a result.

The rear-engined layout has allowed Renault to push the wheels out to each corner, and this makes the new Twingo particularly agile, with a turning circle of just 8.59 metres.

Boot capacity is 219 litres, increasing to 980 litres with the 50:50 split rear seats folded forward, while loads up to 2.31 metres can be carried thanks to the folding front passenger seat.

There’s also 29 litres of space beneath the front seats, a 6.4-litre glovebox and a 2.6-litre compartment in the centre console.

The new Renault Twingo is available to order now, with first deliveries expected in late September.
