Honda today revealed the first details of the eagerly anticipated new Civic Type R.

The company confirmed that the new Type R will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with direct injection, developing at least 280 PS.

Honda’s ambitions for the new model are that it should take the title of the fastest front wheel-drive car around the infamous Nurburging circuit in Germany.

Development of the car is still on-going but is expected to be launched in 2015.

Manabu Nishimae, President, Honda Motor Europe revealed: “We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.”

The company released a film of the Type R at the ‘ring, with Honda WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini at the wheel.
