Subaru has confirmed that the new WRX STI will be coming to the UK.
The good news doesn’t end there – when it arrives in UK showrooms in May 2014, it will wear the highly competitive price tag of £28,995 – £4,000 cheaper than its predecessor.
Subaru say this particularly appealing price has been made possible due to recent currency exchange rate movements.
The new WRX STI is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder ‘Boxer’ engine producing 305hp at 6,000rpm and 290lb/ft of torque at 4,000rpm.
The engine feeds Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system through a reinforced short-throw six-speed manual gearbox.
The company’s Vehicle Dynamics Control and Active Torque Vectoring systems also feature.
The suspension’s spring and damper rates have been re-tuned, with testing at venues such as Germany’s Nurburging circuit said to have focused on maintaining a compliant ride coupled with sporting body composure.
The electronic power steering has received a more rigid mounting to help achieve greater feedback, too.
However, the engineering changes haven’t focused purely on the driving dynamics: the wheelbase has been extended by 25mm to create more rear legroom, while the A-pillars’ forward relocation by 200mm and the addition of a quarter-light to the front window provide for greater visibility.
Boot space has also increased, and larger door apertures making climbing aboard easier.
Soft-touch materials feature highly in the new STI’s interior, together with sporting accents such as carbon-fibre and metal trim.
There are also new red-illuminated instruments and a chunky flat-bottomed steering wheel.
A large rear wing, rear diffuser, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED head-, tail- and brake-lights complete the STI look.
Subaru UK says the WRX STI will be offered with a comprehensive standard specification when it arrives in UK showrooms this May.
It will be priced from £28,995 and will be available in limited numbers.
