2014 SsangYong Korando receives new Giugiaro design

The new 2014 SsangYong Korando has been given a new look, courtesy of famous Italian design house Giugiaro.

The new Korando now boasts a sleeker profile, most notably due to the new front grille and headlights.

The interior has also been redesigned, with much greater use of soft-touch materials as expected in this sector.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre e-XDi200 diesel engine with 147hp when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, while the top-spec six-speed automatic model uses a more powerful 173hp variant.  Both offer maximum torque of 360Nm.

SsangYong say they have worked hard to reduce noise, vibration and harshness throughout the Korando.  For example, engine noise has been reduced through the use of reinforced mountings, while redesigned rubber bushings in the sub-frames further isolate suspension noise from the cabin.

Four models are available – SE, SE4, ELX4 and ELX4 Auto – with all but the SE featuring the company’s intelligent four-wheel drive system.  In normal driving, the engine’s torque is sent to the front wheels only for optimised fuel efficiency, but can be distributed to the rear wheels when conditions dictate.  A lock mode is available below 25mph to equally split torque between front and rear axles.

The new Korando boasts useful ground clearance of 180mm, with approach and departure angles of 22.8 and 28.2 respectively.

This level of practicality continues inside, with a 486 litre boot that increases to 1,312 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a variety of cup holders, a flip-down sunglasses holder and a mobile phone tray.

All models feature electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning, MP3 audio system with Bluetooth and alloy wheels, while ELX4 grades add electrically-adjustable heated leather seats, power-folding mirrors, privacy glass, climate control, front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels and rear parking sensors.

Ordering is open now with the first cars due to arrive at dealers before the end of the year.

Prices start at £14,995 for the 2WD SE and £16,495 for the 4WD SE4, rising to £19,995 for the ELX4 and £21,495 for the range-topping ELX4 Auto.
