The new Skoda Octavia vRS will make its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 10th July 2013.  For the first time, the Octavia vRS will be offered with a choice of either a 220 PS petrol engine or a 184 PS diesel unit.

The 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine is the faster of two, and can propel the vRS to 62 mph in just 6.8 seconds, and on to a 154 mph top speed.

The 2.0-litre TDI diesel version achieves the 62 mph sprint in 8.1 seconds, with a 144 mph top speed.  Both engines are more efficient, with claims of up to 19% less fuel consumed.  Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration technologies are standard.

A six-speed manual gearbox is standard on both models, with the well-regarded dual-clutch DSG transmission available as an option.

The Octavia vRS boasts a sportier suspension set-up than ordinary models, which lowers the body by 12 mm (13 mm for the estate).  It’s a familiar MacPherson strut configuration at the front, with triangular wishbones, while the rear uses a newly-developed multi-link axle.  An electronic diff lock, dubbed XDS, is now standard and is integrated into the electronic stability control (ESC).  Steering is electro-mechanical with progressive assistance.

Externally, the vRS is clearly the sportiest model of the range, with a dedicated vRS-style bumper, distinctive honeycomb air intakes, LED daytime running lights and bi-xenon headlights as standard.  Red brake callipers peer through the sporty light-alloy wheels, available in three sizes: 17-inch Dorado wheels with 225/45 tyres; 18-inch Gemini (in either silver or anthracite) and Pictoris wheels with 225/40 tyres, or an aggressively-styled 19-inch Xtrem alloy wheels in black.

At the rear, two large, trapezoidal-shaped chrome exhaust tailpipes poke through a modest diffuser, there’s a subtle spoiler and LED lights with the brand’s now familiar C-shape.

Inside, new vRS-design sport seats welcome you, as does a sporty three-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather, matching the gearshift gaitor and handbrake.  Stainless steel sill plates and pedals, colour Maxi-DOT instrument display and ambient lighting complete the look.

Skoda CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland says: “Our latest model stands for horsepower and fuel efficiency and, at the same time, for emotion and rationality. Never before has an Octavia vRS been so fast and dynamic and yet so spacious, convenient, safe and comfortable as the third generation of our compact sports car. In this perfect combination, the new Octavia vRS and Octavia estate vRS set new standards in the sporty compact class and also takes the brand’s sporty genes with it on the road. A perfect car for free time and everyday use, maximum power, the latest technology and great value for money.”

The new Skoda Octavia vRS goes on sale in the UK in July.  Prices are yet to be confirmed, but are expected to start around £22,500.
