The new SEAT Leon Cupra has been unveiled, and it’s set to be the most powerful SEAT production car ever made.

It will be offered in two versions – the Cupra with 265PS and the Cupra 280 with – you guessed it – 280PS.

Both are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with identical torque outputs of 350Nm, available in a wide spread from 1,750rpm to 5,300rpm.

The three-door SC Cupra is still capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds, and will continue until its 155mph limited top speed.

The Cupra 280 – available as both a three- and five-door – completes the same sprint in 5.7 seconds when equipped with the optional dual-clutch DSG transmission, or 5.8s with the standard six-speed manual ‘box.

Helping to ensure all that power makes it to the tarmac is a new locking differential that can send up to 100% of engine torque to one wheel if required, and works in conjunction with the various electronic systems to maintain traction and reduce torque steer.

Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and progressive ratio steering are also fitted, while the ESC stability control can be partially or fully deactivated.

Comfort, Sport and Cupra drive modes allow the driver to alter throttle response, DSG shift speed, differential lock aggressiveness, DCC operation and even the behaviour of the sound actuator system that pipes engine noise into the cabin.

Despite the sporting focus, the new Leon Cupra hasn’t lost all sense of environmental responsibility.  Manual models boast combined cycle economy of 44.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 149 g/km, placing them in VED Band F (£140 pa) while DSG-equipped versions weigh in with 42.2 mpg and 155 g/km (VED Band G, £175 pa).

UK models are well equipped, too, with 18-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights, DAB digital radio, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights.  The Cupra 280 adds to this with larger 19-inch alloy wheels, black door mirrors, black exterior mouldings, a black roof spoiler, red brake calipers and satellite navigation as standard.

Prices start at £25,690 for the SC Cupra, £26,940 for the SC Cupra 280 and £27,240 for the five-door Cupra 280.  DSG is available for £1,285.

Ordering opens from today with first deliveries expected in early March 2014.
