The new Audi A8 has been revealed, ahead of its expected arrival in UK showrooms in January 2014.

Engine options include a revised version of the 3.0-litre TFSI petrol engine with output boosted from 290PS to 310PS, a twin-turbo V8 4.0 TFSI with 435PS up from 420PS, a 3.0 TDI producing 258PS up from 250PS, and a 4.2 TDI with 385PS, up from 350PS.

The 4.0-litre TFSI, the quickest model in the A8 range, can now accelerate to 62mph in just 4.5 seconds.

The 3.0-litre TDI is the most efficient diesel unit, returning 47.9mpg while emitting 155 g/km of CO2.

In addition, there’s a 6.3-litre W12 model with 500hp, although its emissions of 270 g/km and a 24.1mpg thirst are likely to limit numbers.

The new Audi S8 is powered by a 520hp version of the 4.0 TFSI, enough to blast it to 62mph in 4.2 seconds.  Cylinder-on-demand technology helps it achieve 28mpg and 235 g/km.

An A8 hybrid model, combining a 2.0 TFSI petrol engine with a 180kW electric motor, will also follow, and is expected to achieve a CO2 figure of 147 g/km and 44.8 mpg.

The new Audi A8 will also mark the debut of the company’s new Matrix LED headlight system.

A series of powerful LED units can be switched on, off or dimmed depending on the driving conditions.  The system can react to the presence of oncoming cars, and can use route data from the satnav system to adjust the beam pattern for approaching curves.

UK pricing, engine line-up and specifications have yet to be announced.
