From February 2009, the Porsche Cayenne will come with the option of a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine, courtesy of Audi, with 240 hp and 550 Nm of torque. Emissions are set to be around 244 g/km of CO2

From February 2009, Porsche will offer a Cayenne with a diesel engine and thus extend its range of engines for the four door, all-wheel drive car further, once again. This decision was taken in response to changed legal regulations especially in European markets, resulting in tax incentives for vehicles with diesel engines. Furthermore, the Porsche stake in Volkswagen Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of modern diesel engines for passenger cars, has opened up new opportunities to utilise sporty compression-ignition technology.

Porsche will equip the Cayenne with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine with 240 bhp (176 kW) supplied by Audi AG, a subsidiary of the VW Group. The average consumption of the Cayenne Diesel is 30.4mpg Combined (9.3 litres/100 km) with emissions of 244 g/km CO2.

The spontaneous throttle response and high torque characteristics of this diesel engine deliver the required performance levels for an athletic all-terrain vehicle such as the Cayenne. The substantial maximum torque of 550 Newton metres complements the sports-oriented chassis dynamics and provides a high degree of control to offer driving enjoyment typical of Porsche.

In response to customer demand, the new Cayenne model will initially be offered in Europe. Preparations for market introduction in other countries are underway.

The Porsche Executive Board is confident that it will maintain the long term market success of the Cayenne series with the low-consumption V6 turbo diesel. In the last financial year 2007/08, 45,478 units of this series (which currently incorporates five different models) were sold - more than ever before in a financial year.

With the introduction of the Cayenne Diesel, Porsche is consistently continuing its commitment to reduce fuel consumption. As early as Spring 2007, the sports car manufacturer had equipped the new generation of the Cayenne series with engines featuring petrol direct injection that consume up to 15 per cent less fuel in real-world driving conditions. Since the summer of 2008, Porsche has also offered the most recent generation of the 911 series with direct-injection petrol engines. The sports car manufacturer is also working on another Cayenne variant with hybrid drive that will exceed 31 mpg, and which will be launched onto the market at the end of the decade.

The new Cayenne with diesel drive will be arriving at Porsche Centres from February 2009. Equipped with the proven Tiptronic-S automatic gearbox as standard, it costs from £40,250. Customers will also be able to explore the dynamic attributes of the car, and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the new Porsche Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone.

Lexus has revealed the new RX, which is set to be an all-hybrid range from 2009, with the RX 450h replacing both the current RX 400h hybrid and RX 350 petrol engine models

Lexus will take its advanced hybrid power technology to a higher level in 2009 with the launch of the new RX 450h. The luxury all-wheel drive model made its world debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, ahead of going on sale in Europe next summer.

In the UK the new-generation RX will be an all-hybrid range, with the RX 450h replacing both the current RX 400h hybrid and RX 350 petrol engine models. Lexus was the first and remains the only manufacturer to offer hybrid models in the segment in Europe, now presenting its second generation model before its rivals manage to bring their first hybrid contenders to the showroom.

Further details about the new Lexus RX 450h will be announced early next year.

The current RX 400h already addresses the prime concerns of today’s motorists, applying advanced technology to deliver high performance and whisper quiet refinement, combined with excellent fuel and emissions efficiency.

Priced from £36,273 and available from Lexus Centres across the UK, the RX 400h gives great fuel consumption (34.9mpg combined cycle) and carbon dioxide emissions (192g/km) that earn a low tax rating. It all adds up to make the RX 400h as cost efficient to own and run as a smaller family car.

Infiniti has released new pictures and details of its fifth body-style for Europe, the G37 Convertible, which will go on sale across Europe from late summer 2009

Infiniti has released new pictures and details of its fifth body-style for Europe, the G37 Convertible. Arguably Infiniti’s most seductive car yet, the G37 Convertible will go on sale across Europe from late summer 2009.

More information and new pictures released of the Infiniti G37 Convertible to coincide with the car’s global reveal at the 2008 LA Auto Show

Will join the Infiniti Europe range from summer 2009

‘Dual beauty’ three-piece folding metal roof

320PS, 3.7-litre V6 with choice of 6MT and 7AT transmissions

Available Bose® open air sound system

Adaptive dual zone climate control system and climate-controlled seats

Unique exterior and interior trim options

Standard rear parking camera and wind break

As the latest expression of ‘Inspired Performance’ by Infiniti, the G37 Convertible combines beautiful styling, exciting performance and a three-piece retracting hardtop that is designed to look as good with the top up as it does down. This ‘dual beauty’ is a rare event among coupé convertibles.

The G37 Convertible offers an all-new design from the A-pillar back compared to the G37 Coupé, with extensive structural reinforcements, a wider rear track, modified rear suspension and a special convertible-focused interior with rear pop-up bar and available headrest audio speakers, wind deflector and climate controlled front seats.

The G37 Convertible, like its coupe sister, is powered by the 3.7-litre VQ-series V6 with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event and Lift) rated at 320PS. The engine is backed by a choice of an electronically controlled seven-speed automatic transmission with magnesium paddle shifters or a responsive close-ratio six-speed manual transmission.

The G37 Convertible’s inviting interior includes standard leather seats, an available Bose® open air sound system that dynamically changes equalisation based on outside noise, roof position and vehicle speed, an adaptive dual zone climate control system that adjusts fan speed in accordance to roof position and vehicle speed, and available climate-controlled seats that provide both heating and cooling functions. Uniquely, a rear parking camera is standard.

The G37 Convertible maintains a coupé-like silhouette with the top up through use of a special three-piece ‘clamshell’ retractable hardtop, which allows for use of a shorter rear overhang and low boot lid. Compared to G Coupé, the G37 Convertible utilises all-new body panels from the A-pillar back, along with a 28mm wider overall width, broader rear track and modified rear suspension.

The automatic top opening/closing sequence takes approximately 30 seconds from start to finish. The open/close switch is located on the centre console, just behind the gearshift lever.

Along with its G Coupé-like proportions, the G37 Convertible offers signature Infiniti styling cues such as flowing front curves, a wave-style aluminium bonnet, expressive front face with double-arch grille and L-shaped High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlights with integrated fog lamps. At the rear, the taillights are unique to the G37 Convertible, incorporating an inner ‘circle of light’ for added distinction at night. The chrome rear boot-lid finisher incorporates both an integrated high-mount brake-light and the small camera for the standard parking monitor system.

Infiniti’s advanced ‘self-healing’ Scratch Shield paint is standard with two G37 Convertible-exclusive colours, Midnight Garnet and Pacific Sky.

The interior design combines sophistication, craftsmanship and thoughtfulness with unique, available systems created to enhance the open-air driving experience. The driver-oriented cockpit features an Infiniti signature ‘double wave’ instrument panel design with Infiniti electroluminescent instrumentation with white-and-violet illumination, integrated multi-function information drive computer display and analogue Infiniti clock. The double hand-stitched leather-covered steering wheel is designed for maximum comfort and usability, with standard wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. Genuine magnesium paddle shifters are standard for the 7-speed automatic transmission.

Special ‘Silk Obi’ aluminium interior trim, inspired by fine Japanese silk, is located across the instrument panel, on the centre console and on the door panels in a shape redolent of Japanese spears. Also available are two choices of genuine wood trim. Leather-upholstered seating is standard and is offered in three colours shared with the Coupé - Graphite (black), Wheat and Stone - and a fourth that will be unique to the Convertible.

Heated 8-way power driver/8-way front passenger seats are standard, with climate-controlled seats (with heating and cooling functions) available as an option. A power walk-in device with position memory provides easy access to the 2nd row seats (the front seats move forward automatically at the touch of a button to allow passengers into the rear seats). A rear wind deflector helps reduce wind turbulence when the top is down.

The G37 Convertible’s long list of comfort and convenience features includes standard Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and an Adaptive Dual Zone Climate Control System includes an advanced air conditioning system that adjusts to provide optimal comfort with the top up or down.

Two audio systems are available, starting with a standard 6-speaker AM/FM/6CD system with MP3 playback capability, Radio Data System (RDS) and centre console-mounted auxiliary input plus 7-inch colour display. The second option is a 13-speaker Infiniti Bose® open air sound system that automatically optimises EQ settings for open/closed top positions. The system’s special Bose® Personal Headrest Speakers, mounted in the front seat headrests, enable superior front audio quality regardless of the top position.

Like the G Coupé and G Sedan, the new G37 Convertible’s outstanding dynamic performance credentials start with a combination of its advanced FM platform and award-winning V6 engine. Every G37 Convertible comes equipped with a standard 3.7-litre V6 engine with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event and Lift), rated at 320PS.

The VVEL system combines hydraulically-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side, helping to improve not only performance and response but also emissions and fuel efficiency (over a non-VVEL system). It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilising combustion when the engine is cool.

The G37 Convertible is available with a choice of an electronically controlled 7-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, downshift rev matching, Drive Sport (DS) mode and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) that allows for quicker shifts in sporty driving situations and magnesium paddle shifters; or a responsive, lightweight close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.

The G37 Convertible’s responsive handling and ride performance is provided by its advanced FM (Front Mid-ship) platform design, which optimises front/rear weight balance and creates a rigid, stable foundation for the 4-wheel independent suspension. The front suspension is a double wishbone design, with a single pivot lower wishbone and a long upper link. The multi-link rear suspension separates the shock absorbers and springs, locating the shock absorber in-line with the wheel centre. These designs help minimise alignment changes and reduce suspension friction for nimble handling and smooth riding characteristics.

Responsive steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensing system. Also standard on the G37 Convertible is Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with cancel switch and Traction Control System (TCS).

Braking performance is provided by standard 4-wheel vented discs with 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The G37 Convertible will also be available with larger ventilated rotors (14.0-inch front/13.8-inch rear) and aluminium four-piston callipers front/two-piston callipers rear, embossed with Infiniti lettering.

Infiniti’s Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) with Brake Assist, which helps in maintaining a consistent following distance from the car ahead, will be optional. It also identifies sudden braking situations with laser sensors to determine distance and relative speed of the car ahead in the same lane and ‘pre-pressurises’ the Brake Assist system before the driver steps on the brake pedal.

Split 5-spoke 18-inch aluminium-alloy wheels with P225/50VR18 front and P245/45R18 rear tyres are standard on the G37 Convertible, while special 19-inch cast aluminium-alloy wheels with high performance tyres (P225/45WR19 front and P245/40WR19 rear) will be optional.

The rear seat includes fixed head restraints with a rear pop-up bar. The G37 Convertible also features reinforced front side members, front pillars and body sills.

More details about the G37 Convertible’s European technical specification, performance figures, equipment levels and pricing will be released closer to its market introduction.

The new 370Z now sports a shorter wheelbase, lightweight body materials, more horsepower and a new 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, as well as a synchronised down/up shift rev control system for the manual transmission

In the first full redesign of the iconic Nissan Z since its re-introduction in 2003, the new 370Z now sports a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, new engine with more horsepower and a new 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, as well as the world’s first synchronised down/up shift rev control system for the manual transmission.

But to get the full measure of the new model, now designated the Nissan 370Z, one need look no farther than the subtle upswept line of the new rear quarter window. Quintessentially Z, the window is reminiscent of the original 1970 240Z - a car that revolutionised the sports car world with its unique combination of performance, style and, especially, value. The new 370Z continues this philosophy, offering accessible performance, true sports car handling and athletic, agile design.

“The fresh character of the Nissan 370Z is immediately apparent in the crisp new exterior design, which is sportier yet still immensely identifiable as a Z,” said Pierre

Loing, Nissan’s European Vice President for Product Planning. “The new 370Z builds on the best features of both the first and last generation’s Z-cars - respectful but not retro, simple yet sophisticated, and unmistakeably Z.”

The New Exterior: More athletic, more muscular, 100% Z

The 2009 370Z’s dynamic new styling offers dual benefits - a more aggressive appearance and a lighter, tighter structure for enhanced performance. The new Z’s wheelbase is nearly 100mm shorter than the previous generation Z (2550mm versus 2650mm), accomplished by moving the rear wheels forward in the 2nd generation FM platform, while overall length is reduced by 70mm (4250mm versus 4320mm). At the same time, the overall width has been increased by 33mm and the rear track by 55mm.

The more compact exterior dimensions and expanded use of lightweight materials help reduce weight, while at the same time the body structure has been extensively reinforced, improving rigidity.

Along with its new structure and stance, the 370Z has a taut new skin - one that looks completely new, yet completely Z. The exterior design incorporates intentional 240Z styling cues, a sleek aerodynamic shape, a ‘dynamic motion’ feel with a dramatic cantilevered roof (with Nissan GT-R styling cues) and a ‘low visual gravity’.

The 370Z’s sleek silhouette is defined by its upswept quarter window design that is echoed by the dynamic upward curvature in the lower rocker panel and the sense of the taut sheet metal moulding itself around the wheels and frame. Attention to detail and functionality is evident throughout the exterior design, including the addition of a turn indicator integrated into the Z logo mounted between the front wheel and door.

370Z Interior: putting the driver at the heart of the action

The interior design of the new 370Z continues the Z tradition of enhancing driving pleasure, no matter what the road or traffic conditions offer. Additionally, particular attention has been paid to the quality of the material, as well as the fit and finish.

The traditional 2-seat layout is built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length centre console separating the driver and passenger’s seat. In the rear is an open luggage area with enhanced storage and accessibility.

The information layer provides enhanced visibility with easy access to all key data. The gauges are once again attached to the steering column, so the driver doesn’t have to choose between the perfect steering wheel position and visibility of the gauges.

Interior packaging is also enhanced from the previous generation, including the removal of the rear strut brace (replaced with less intrusive structural reinforcements) and by adding a new ‘shelf’ area behind the seats, creating an ideal area for storing briefcases. A retractable cover is standard on the 370Z and a locking glove compartment has been added.

Life on board has been improved thanks to the addition of an engine start and stop button, larger diameter dials and thanks to the use of premium-feel material on seats, armrest and door trims (depending on grade).

3.7-litre engine: the Z’s heart and soul

As its new moniker suggests, the new 370Z is now powered by a 3.7-litre VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift). Along with its larger displacement, the new engine gives better power delivery all the way to the 7,000rpm redline, improved low-end power and more high-end torque, creating an entirely new driving experience. Approximately 35 percent of the engine’s parts are new, versus the previous design. Power is rated at 331PS, while torque is 366Nm. Engine output figures for Europe are subject to homologation.

The new engine is backed by a choice of two new advanced transmissions, both designed to improve driver performance. The newly improved close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox includes the world’s first synchronised down/up shift rev control system, which allows drivers of any skill level to experience perfectly smooth gear shifts every time. The ‘Synchro Rev Control’ function automatically adjusts engine speed when changing gear to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially ‘blipping’ the throttle to smooth out any down/up shifts.

“This exciting new Z represents the essence of the Nissan brand, just as the original 240Z did nearly 40 years before,” said Loing. “It provides passionate performance at an excellent value - just what was needed then and just what sports car enthusiasts are looking for today.”

European deliveries will begin in April 2009.

The 2009 Nissan Cube is set to go on sale in Europe, with a choice of 1.5-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol power trains, and an extensive range of personalisation options

In 2002, an all-new second generation Nissan Cube was introduced in the Japanese market. More spacious inside, more glass outside, with more power and, more importantly, a few more angles and curved surface details added to its compact, slab-sided exterior. Quintessentially Japanese, this new Cube took Tokyo by storm. A pocket-sized fun-and-function cocktail mixing the charm of Godzilla and the wit of Mothra, buyers were smitten.

The Nissan Cube soon found an audience outside of Japan - not in person, but through its exposure in fashion and automotive magazines, videos and on the Web.

Back to today, more than 10 years since its original appearance and the Nissan Cube is ready to go global next year in an all-new, dramatically rethought third generation design that is clever, quirky, witty, fun and uniquely functional. And still totally square.

More than just unique geometry, however, the new 2009 Nissan Cube is also conceived as a totally different take on an automobile - a car that doesn’t want to be defined as car. “Combining unique design with true spaciousness and a warm personality, Cube will have a unique place on the market,” said Simon Thomas, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Nissan in Europe. “Cube is a vehicle that people of all ages can fall in love with, even if they’re not normally interested in cars.”

Though its uniquely styled, asymmetrical body makes a standout statement against the backdrop of today’s look-alike mainstream vehicles, Cube presents a range of strong rational arguments for purchase as well.

“The new Nissan Cube will be bought by individuals who will see it as an extension of their personality and reflects their individuality,” said Thomas. “Cube customers are not show-offs, but style-conscious and open-minded.”

A ‘Bulldog in Sunglasses’
The all-new 2009 Nissan Cube builds on the existing DNA characterised by its non-traditional design, with an improved stance and an added sense of dynamic movement. With Cube’s long wheelbase relative to its overall length (a 2530mm wheelbase against a 3980mm overall length) and wide track, the wheels, in effect, are pushed out to each corner - providing exceptional space utilisation and a confident-looking stance that is described as a ‘bulldog in sunglasses’.

“The designers, engineers and planners’ effort and passion in creating the next generation Cube was unheard of - perhaps only exceeded in recent memory by that of the Nissan GT-R development team,” explains Pierre Loing, Nissan’s European Vice President for Product Planning. “They were constantly drawing, cartooning, adding thoughts and ideas, which is how the image of the bulldog emerged and evolved. This was not a traditional development process.”

Along with its stance, the ‘incognito canine’ look is aided by the wide headlights and grille treatment, the small but substantial body proportions and the short ‘tail’ section. In the rear, the bar-type taillights reinforce the wide, anchored feel. The Cube’s creators also sought to maintain a sense of ‘pure design’, reducing the number of character lines to give simplicity and freshness to the styling.

Another unique aspect of the Cube’s exterior is the greenhouse. The A-pillars are positioned far outward and relatively upright, giving a wider range of forward visibility.

The front door windows utilise a ‘photo frame’ design patterned after a personal photo frame, while the asymmetrical wraparound side/rear window creates enhanced rear diagonal visibility for lane changes and reverse parking.

“This ‘geometric circle shape in the square’ rear window is Cube’s signature,” said Loing. “Though there are D-pillars on both sides of the Cube, the visual effect of the narrower passenger-side pillar is quite remarkable in the overall appearance, a look aided by the asymmetrical back door.”

Unlike typical top-hinged or clamshell-style utility rear doors, Cube features an easy-access refrigerator-style opening, which makes it possible to open or close it even if parked tight against other cars in parallel parking spaces or when backed in against a wall or other obstacle.

The 2009 Nissan Cube is available in several eye-catching colours, with evocative names like Witty Military, White Pearl, Sea Turquoise and Bitter Chocolate.

And that’s not all. Customers will be able to personalise their Cube, with designs available for the glass roof and also body stickers.

A ‘Casual Lounge’ Interior
“The centrepiece of the new Cube’s universal appeal is its surprisingly roomy interior that offers room for five in a lounge-like comfort. It creates a highly changeable space - for interacting with friends. It’s a space that is highly changeable and adaptable to owners’ evolving lives, with plenty of room for personalisation,” said Loing.

Cube’s clever, inspired and surprisingly open occupant space was conceived with a ‘Jacuzzi Curve’ layout and ‘floating meter pod’ driver’s area. It combines ‘casual lounge’-style passenger seating with a relaxed driving experience. The interactive interior is anchored by its curve-themed architecture, such as the subtle wavy shaping of the instrument panel, door panels, seat shapes, and the iconic ‘Water Drop’ that can be seen in the cupholders and the climate control design. They are inspired by nature and the calming way that ripples move outward from a drop in water.

The comfortable Cube seating includes individual driver’s and passenger seats, along with a ‘lounge sofa’ style sliding rear bench seat.

The sliding rear seat can be adjusted to three positions and is positioned higher than the front seats, theatre style, enhancing rear passenger comfort and visibility. “The new Cube’s interior leaves room for imagination and personalisation, yet also starts with a solid functional purpose,” explained Loing.

Stress-Free Driving, Room For Personalisation
Cube’s stress-free driving experience is the result of a number of factors: a tall seating position made possible by the tall body height, an extremely short bonnet ‘invisible length’ (the area of the bonnet panel that the driver is unable to see) and the good rear visibility for parking and reversing.

The Cube’s interior also benefits from its large sunroof, giving a light and airy atmosphere. As well as the traditional blind to prevent heat build up on sunny days, there is a shoji shade, inspired by traditional Japanese shades made of rice paper which can be drawn across the sunroof, allowing light to enter but minimising heat build up!

Other interior features include the ‘floating pod’ instrument panel with asymmetrical light blue and white gauges, which are designed to make it easier to distinguish between the speedometer and the tachometer. The gauge needles ‘sweep’ when the engine is started to add a sense of flair, while the gradation effect gives a natural ambience similar to the glow of the white moon and the blue earth.

Convenient storage spaces and cup/bottle holders are abundant throughout the Cube interior. There are also detachable multi-hooks for holding bags or hats, which can be moved from place to place - including the instrument panel and rear doors.

The ‘shelf expression’ concept features two ‘shelves’ located on top centre and passenger side of the instrument panel. The shelves can be personalised with accessory

wood-like trim or shag carpeting. Cube’s ‘Magic Rubber Bands’, another clever Cube accessory item, are colourful rubber straps (red, yellow, orange or silver) that slip into cutouts on the door armrests to secure items such as maps, nametags, photos, towels or small stuffed animals.

“The interior concept is really about the Cube conforming to the users’ needs, rather than the other way around - you can put your favourite items anywhere you want, not where the vehicle tells you to,” said Loing. “The designers intended every aspect of the Cube interior be delightful as well as functional.”

The Cube interior is offered in two colour environments, Black and Beige. Both trims come with a quilted suede-like fabric with special ‘natural wave’ stitching designed to provide a combination of relaxation and genuine ‘driving enjoyment’ attitude.

Petrol and diesel engines for Europe

In Europe, the Cube will be offered with a double engine offer, with both 1.5-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol powertrains in the European line-up.

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman have been revised, with subtle styling changes and an increase in engine capacity and power, which leads not only to improved performance but also reduced emissions and greater economy

Porsche is presenting the second generation of the mid-engined Boxster and Cayman sports cars for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The highlight of the new generation is of course the new flat-six boxer engines developed with new technical features from the ground up, providing not only more power, but also significantly greater fuel efficiency than their predecessors. A further improvement of both fuel economy and performance is guaranteed by the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or PDK for short, the new double-clutch gearbox.

Newly developed Boxer engines with even more power on even less fuel
Displacing 2.9 litres, the “basic” engine develops 255 bhp (188 kW) in the Boxster and 265 bhp (195 kW) in the Cayman, an increase by 10 and, respectively, 20 horsepower over the preceding models. The 3.4-litre power unit in the S-versions, benefiting from Direct Fuel Injection, now delivers 310 bhp (228 kW) in the Boxster S and 320 bhp (235 kW) in the Cayman S, up by 15 and, respectively, 25 bhp. An outstanding power-to-weight ratio ranging from 4.2 kg (9.3 lb)/bhp on the Cayman S to 5.2 kg (11.5 lb)/bhp on the Boxster offers the driver maximum driving dynamics on minimum fuel. As a result, the Cayman S with PDK and Launch Control featured in the optional Sports Chrono Package accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, setting the benchmark in the range, while the Boxster with its six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard completes the same exercise in 5.9 seconds.

Featuring PDK, both the Boxster and the Cayman for the first time outperform the nine-litre consumption mark: Both models with the new 2.9-litre Boxer engine make do with 8.9 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 26.4 mpg US) according to the EU4 standard - 11 per cent less than the former models with Tiptronic S. Reducing fuel consumption by an even more significant 16 per cent to 9.2 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 25.5 mpg US), the 3.4-litre versions with PDK offer an even greater saving over their predecessors with Tiptronic S.

Roadster and Coupé with even more signs of distinction
The new two-seaters are clearly distinguishable from outside through their newly designed front and rear ends. The new halogen headlights with their integrated direction indicators are reminiscent of the lights on the Carrera GT, the new LED rear lights tapering out to the outside and integrated elegantly in the modified rear end of the car.

From the front the Roadster and Coupé differ clearly from one another through the distinctive design of their air intakes, from the rear through the new rear panels with diffuser inserts on the Boxster and a wind deflector plate on the Cayman.

The rod-shaped positioning lights in LED light conductor technology add a particular touch of class in terms of the cars’ looks, also through their horizontal arrangement in the outer air intakes. Yet a further highlight is provided by the foglamps featured as standard - rectangular in shape on the Boxster, round on the Cayman. For the first time both models are available with a Lights Package featuring bi-xenon headlights, dynamic curve lights and LED daytime driving lights. Replacing the foglamps, these light units are made up on the Boxster of four LEDs positioned next to one another, while on the Cayman four LEDs are arranged in round light units like the eyes of a dice.

PDK: shifting gears even more quickly, reducing fuel consumption by up to 16 per cent
All four sports cars are available for the first time with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or PDK carried over directly from motorsport and replacing the former Tiptronic S. Equipped with the PDK double-clutch gearbox, the Roadster and Coupé accelerate to 100 km/h or 62 mph 0.1 seconds faster than with the manual six-speed gearbox now also featured on the “basic” models.

Acceleration is particularly fast and dynamic with one of the optional Sports Chrono Packages featuring Launch Control for maximum acceleration from a standing start and the Race Track Gearshift Strategy for the fastest conceivable gearshift as an exclusive highlight on the PDK models. Benefiting from Launch Control, the respective models accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h or 62 mph yet another 2/10ths of a second faster.

The progress offered by PDK is even more impressive when it comes to fuel economy reduced by up to 16 per cent from the former figure on the first generation: According to the EU4 consumption standard, the Boxster and Cayman equipped with PDK consume just 8.9 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 26.3 mpg US, with the S-models offering almost the same level of economy at just 9.2 litres or 25.5 mpg US.

Dynamic suspension and supreme brakes
The suspension with its new set-up gives the new models a combination of even greater driving dynamics and enhanced comfort all in one. Modification of the valve control map on the steering transmission serves furthermore to reduce steering forces, giving the Boxster and Cayman even more agile and spontaneous steering behaviour.

The wheels come in new design and are half an inch wider on the “basic” models than in the past in order to accommodate the larger brake system of the S-models on the front axle. Both the Boxster and Cayman feature the latest generation of PSM Porsche Stability Management now offering two new functions: Brake Pre-Loading and the Brake Assistant. Whenever the driver lets go of the gas pedal very quickly - which is typical of an upcoming emergency braking manoeuvre - the PSM hydraulic control unit builds up an appropriate level of pressure on the wheel brakes before the driver even presses down the brake pedal, moving the brake pads slightly towards the discs for immediate action. This significantly improves brake response and shortens stopping distances accordingly. When recognising that the driver is braking in an emergency due to very fast operation of the brake pedal and a defined brake force, the PSM hydraulic control unit actively delivers the brake pressure required for maximum stopping power.

New audio and communication systems
Both the Boxster and the Cayman come as standard with the new CDR-30 CD radio boasting an easy-to-read five-inch monochromatic display and the ability to play MP3 CDs. New PCM Porsche Communication Management available as an option complete with hard disc navigation serves as the central control unit for all audio, communication and navigation features.

PCM is now even more versatile, efficient and a lot easier to use than before, standing out in particular through its control monitor enabling the driver to select specific functions simply by tipping the appropriate key and increased in size from 5.8 to 6.5 inches.

As an option PCM is available with highly convenient voice control and, in conjunction with the optional, universal audio interface, can now be used also to control external audio sources such as an iPod® or USB stick.

Last but not least, Porsche’s new two-seaters are available as an option with seat ventilation combined with seat heating on both the standard seats and the comfort seats with full or partial leather.

The new models are entering the market in February 2009.

Boxster 2.9 £34,420
Boxster S £41,250

Cayman 2.9 £36, 870
Cayman S £45,050

The new Auris 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start is the first Toyota to go on sale in the UK with the benefit of Toyota Optimal Drive, a new technology that will be a feature of all future Toyota models

The Toyota Auris gains a competitive advantage in the C-segment hatchback market with the introduction of a new engine that delivers lower emissions, better fuel economy and improved power and torque. And with the benefit of Toyota Stop&Start technology, environmental performance is further enhanced, with particular benefit in urban traffic.

All-new 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine with Stop&Start introduced in Toyota Auris

Developed with Toyota Optimal Drive, Toyota’s comprehensive technology for achieving optimum engine efficiency, fuel economy and reduced emissions with no compromise in driving pleasure

17 per cent lower CO2 emissions (135g/km) and 19 per cent improvement in fuel consumption (48.7mpg combined cycle) compared to previous 1.4-litre VVT-i unit

Stop&Start enables quiet, automatic engine stop and re-start when vehicle is stationary and in neutral

Compact and lightweight new 100bhp (101 DIN hp) 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine, to be built at TMUK plant in Deeside, North Wales

New six-speed manual transmission

On sale now, on-the-road prices from £12,705 (T2 three-door)

The new Auris 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start has the distinction of being the first Toyota to go on sale in the UK with the benefit of Toyota Optimal Drive, a breakthrough in powertrain engineering and design technology that will be a feature of all future Toyota models.

Toyota Optimal Drive

Toyota Optimal Drive is not a single solution, it covers a range of different technologies that can be applied to achieve real-world results in environmental performance, making the best use possible of Toyota’s formidable engineering skills. The result is environmental efficiency, but no loss of driving pleasure.

The principal aims of Toyota Optimal Drive are to:

Reduce harmful emissions

Increase fuel combustion efficiency

Cause no compromise in driving pleasure

This contrasts with the approach of some car manufacturers, which have elected to launch special eco-themed models with design, engineering and equipment tweaks to achieve lower emissions and better fuel consumption, often at the cost of comfort and driving pleasure.

Like Hybrid Synergy Drive, as featured in Prius, Toyota Optimal Drive is a central element in Toyota’s strategy for environmental leadership and its long term ambition of building the ultimate zero emissions car.

All new Toyota models will benefit from Toyota Optimal Drive, with new iQ, Avensis and Auris 1.33 Stop&Start leading the way. Each provides significant gains in environmental performance and running costs, while maintaining high standards of quality, comfort and driver rewards.

New 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine with Toyota Optimal Drive technology

The all-new 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine represents the latest in Toyota lightweight powertrain technology. Benefiting from Toyota’s motorsport experience, where compact and powerful engine design is crucial, the new unit is 54mm shorter and 127mm narrower than the previous 1.4-litre VVT-i and weights 13kg less. The result is a four-cylinder engine that is the same size as a three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i. Its small bore and long stroke design gives a narrow block and reduces weight to give a very high power-to-weight ratio.

New pistons were developed with a smaller contact area to help produce quick and efficient combustion. Piston weight was also significantly reduced, from 280g to 180g - a 36 per cent saving - which means they use less energy. For leaner combustion, an oil jet was integrated into the design.

The new engine gives a solid torque curve that is ideal for everyday driving. Meticulous engineering has brought an output of 100Nm per litre, with a maximum 132Nm developed at 3,800rpm.

Toyota engineers streamlined the intake channel and used computer simulation to optimise airflow. Surfaces were made smooth and any angles or sharp edges were rounded off to help reduce turbulence.

More weight has been saved by using a cylinder head cover and resin intake manifold. In addition, the highly rigid aluminium crankcase is connected to the transaxle casing, improving rigidity of the joint in the powertrain and thus reducing noise and vibration. An all-new camshaft profile was designed, reducing weight and friction.

Dual VVT-i

Dual VVT-i (variable valve timing - intelligent) provides continuous, variable control of both the intake and exhaust valves to optimise performance and fuel consumption. This also yields more torque at low engine speeds and helps reduce exhaust emissions.

Toyota Stop&Start

Auris is the first model in Europe to benefit from Toyota Stop&Start technology. When the car is stationary, with the transmission in neutral and the driver’s foot off the clutch pedal, the engine automatically and quietly stops to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. When the driver re-engages the clutch, the engine automatically restarts. This brings particular benefits in urban traffic, with a potential 15 per cent improvement in the amount of fuel used and CO2 emissions.

Stop&Start is very quiet, smooth and refined in its operation. In a world-first design, the system has a permanently engaged starter gear mechanism: the starter motor is in direct contact with the ring gear on the engine, which means the engine stops and starts quickly and quietly. Compared to the 1.4 VVT-i, the start-up noise level has been reduced by 9dB and starting time cut from 0.7 to 0.4 seconds.

New six-speed manual transmission

The engine is matched to newly developed six-speed manual transmission, with ratios calculated to deliver the best possible balance of performance and fuel economy. The twin-shaft unit is 11 per cent smaller and has 15 per cent fewer components than the five-speed unit, but has a higher torque capacity. Friction is reduced and the driver enjoys an improved gear shift feel. Using an extra gear compared to the transmission used in the previous Auris 1.4, VVT-i, it also gives more refinement at high speed.

Built in Britain

From October 2009, the 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK’s (TMUK) factory at Deeside in North Wales. Almost €115 million has been invested in the plant in the past year to prepare for production of the new engine, which comes in addition to the €1.12 billion invested in operations since the factory opened in 1992.

Deeside currently produces 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engines at a rate of about 185,000 units a year. It also undertakes casting and machining of engine sets for export to other Toyota plants around the world.

Until Deeside production comes on stream Auris will be fitted with engines manufactured in Japan. Five-door versions of Auris are also built in Britain at TMUK’s Burnaston plant, near Derby.

On-the-road prices for the new Toyota Auris 1.33 Dual VVT-i with Stop&Start start at £12,705 for the T2 three-door. Across the range, prices are just £200 more than for the equivalent, previous 1.4 VVT-i models.

T2 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start 3-door: £12,705

T2 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start 5-door: £13,205

TR 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start 3-door: £13,395

TR 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start 5-door: £13,895

T3 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start 3-door: £13,705

T3 1.33 Dual VVT-i Stop&Start 5-door: £14,205

Honda will launch its first automatic transmission for a diesel engine in the New Year, with the new gearbox debuting in the latest Accord

Honda will launch its first automatic transmission for a diesel engine in the New Year, with the new gearbox debuting in the latest Accord.

The eagerly-awaited auto ‘box for Honda’s i-DTEC engine means the Accord will appeal to a new segment of customers, particularly in the corporate market, where high mileage user choosers often will only consider an automatic transmission.

“Company car tax legislation has driven much growth in diesel sales and resulted in traditional ‘petrol heads’ re-assessing their choice of powertrain,” said Graham Avent, Manager - Corporate Sales, Cars, Honda (UK). “For many of these drivers, the final hurdle in their transition to driving a diesel is whether or not it is available as an automatic.”

Since creating its first diesel engine in 2004, Honda’s intention was to produce a high quality automatic gearbox in-house, rather than compromise the performance of its i-DTEC engine by mating it with an externally supplied transmission.

The result is a responsive ‘box that’s smooth and sporty with practically zero lag between kick-down and gear shift - especially when using the steering-wheel mounted paddles. In the saloon, top speed is 129mph with 136PS at 4000rpm and torque of 350Nm at 2000rpm. By comparison, the Tourer manages a top speed of 126mph.

The Large Project Leader for Accord, Hiroyuki Ikegami commented: “Having equipped the Accord with a newly developed engine, it would have made no sense to compromise the exceptional flexibility of the i-DTEC by mating it with an externally supplied transmission. Therefore, despite it taking more time, we have undertaken an extensive development programme for our gearbox in order to bring an automatic diesel to market.”

The new 5-speed unit uses the same straight gate layout and paddle shift system as seen on the Accord petrol automatic earlier this year. CO2 emissions are 170g/km (saloon) and 173-174g/km (Tourer) depending on model grade, while fuel economy is 44.1mpg (combined) for the saloon and 42.8mpg (combined) for the Tourer.

The Accord i-DTEC automatic will go on sale in January 2009 priced from £22,400 (Accord 2.2 i-DTEC ES saloon) and £23,700 (Accord 2.2 i-DTEC ES Tourer).

All engines in the Accord line up are designed to meet Euro 5 legislation.

From November, 61hp and 71hp versions of the Smart ForTwo will feature micro hybrid drive as standard, an automatic stop/start function that helps to provide significant savings in terms of both fuel economy and emissions

Smart is set to clean up when it comes to environmental compatibility and driver enjoyment with the launch of a new model with micro hybrid drive (mhd) technology and enhanced equipment levels.

From November, 61hp and 71hp versions of the Smart fortwo will feature micro hybrid drive as standard, which is an automatic stop/start function that helps to provide significant savings in terms of both fuel economy and emissions.

The Smart mhd models return fuel savings of up to 24 per cent and lower CO2 emissions to 103 grams per kilometre.

The micro hybrid drive system operates during the engine idling phases. The engine stops when it senses that the Smart’s speed drops below 5mph and the driver is braking. When the driver releases the brake pedal the engine is instantly restarted.

The start/stop function makes no additional demand on the driver and, working in conjunction with the Smart’s automated manual transmission, is completely seamless thanks to a powerful belt-driven starter generator that replaces both the conventional starter and alternator.

If the driver prefers not to use the micro hybrid drive system, it can be deactivated via a switch on the centre console until the next time the car is started.

Complementing the Smart’s improvements in driveability is an upgraded interior and new exterior finishes.

Changes to the spacious cabin include a redesigned instrument cluster with an enhanced LCD display and new net storage pockets in the driver and passenger doors, while the passion’s “design red” interior trim has now also been updated to match the new “rally red” paint finish.

The elegant “grey metallic” completes the revisions to the smart’s exterior colour palette, while new optional 15″ six-spoke alloy wheels add to the already stylish appearance. For even more glamour these wheels can also be specified in a chrome finish.

The micro hybrid variant is available as a coupe and a cabrio in all three lines - pure, pulse and passion - and is priced from £7,060 on the road.
