Hot on the heels of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon that goes on sale in March, BMW’s popular Touring model will reach the UK market in September 2010

Hot on the heels of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon that goes on sale in March, BMW’s popular Touring model will reach the UK market in September 2010. It will be the fourth generation of Touring models in the 5 Series range and brings traditional BMW driving qualities and elegance to those seeking flexibility, adaptability and versatility from their car.

Initially available in four derivatives, the new BMW 5 Series Touring offers a choice of two petrol cars, the 523i and 535i, and two diesel models, the 520d and 530d. All four are packed with innovative technology that ensures class-leading performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions, while providing an elegant, comfortable and driver-oriented estate car.

Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW UK, said: “BMW can fairly claim to have created the idea to turn executive saloon cars into practical yet still fun to drive estates with its first 5 Series Touring in the UK back in 1991. Up until then most large estates were utilitarian load-luggers that eschewed both the driving capabilities of their saloon cousins as well as the style. The 5 Series Touring changed all that and its success has led to the new fourth generation being unveiled today.

“Since the UK is the third largest market for the 5 Series Touring, this new model is an important and exciting one for us. Offering best in class performance, fuel efficiency and emissions, I have high hopes for the new 5 Series Touring here.”

The new BMW 5 Series Touring is an uncompromising synthesis of power, handling, versatility and elegant style. It has been designed to reflect its almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution with beautifully balanced proportions, short overhangs, a flowing roofline and a long, contoured bonnet. It is at once a sporting, dynamic and attractive car with intelligent versatility built in.

For example, all models feature 40/20/40 flat-folding rear seat backrests, a luggage load cover that retracts and lowers automatically with the tailgate and a self opening rear window for ease of loading smaller items – a unique feature in the market. All models also feature self-levelling air suspension at the rear to ensure that the Touring is unaffected when carrying heavy loads. For the comfort of driver and passengers alike Dakota leather upholstery is now standard for all models as is automatic air conditioning with two-zone control.

Outside, the roof rails are now finished in matt aluminium, although black high gloss or matt black can be specified at no cost and chromeline exterior window surrounds are now standard. Matt aluminium or high gloss shadowline can be specified optionally. Park Distance Control, front and rear, and Bluetooth telephone preparation are also now standard for all models while a USB audio interface and ambient lighting are standard for six-cylinder cars.

Space and comfort

The boot capacity of the new Touring is 560 litres, 60 more than the outgoing model, and a huge 1,670 litres with all rear seats folded. A further option is Extended Storage that includes “cargo” functionality for rear seats. This allows the rear seat backrests to be fixed in a more upright position thereby increasing luggage capacity by 30 litres and minimising wasted space behind rear seats. This feature increases normal load capacity to 590 litres as well as adding lashing rails, storage nets and straps. Naturally, a ski bag is available as an option.

The new Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class at 2,968mm, creating a greater feeling of interior space. This translates into an extra 13mm of knee room for rear passengers, compared to the previous 5 Series.

Inside, the cabin features many of the sporting but luxurious quality and comfort features found in the BMW 7 Series. Inclined seven degrees towards the driver, the asymmetrically designed centre console ensures that all controls are comfortably within reach. The multifunctional steering wheel has been simplified, putting all of the function keys in one hand and infotainment in the other.

The use of partial Black Panel technology on the instrument panel and centre console adds an extra touch of luxury to the cabin. A signature piece of BMW design, Black Panel technology integrates the centre console into the trim of the car. High-resolution electronic displays are visible when needed, but when not in use they discreetly blend in to form an elegant black band across the interior.

High performance in every aspect

The 520d Touring is expected to be the biggest seller in the UK. Its 1,995cc four cylinder diesel engine features the latest generation common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry which increases power to 184hp at 4,000rpm. Combined with torque of 380 Nm from only 1,900 rpm this jewel of an engine ensures that it can provide swift and safe overtaking responses at any time.

The 520d Touring accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.3 seconds and onto a top speed of 138mph. Sipping fuel at a combined fuel consumption of 54.3mpg and offering a CO2 rating of 137g/km, the BMW 520d Touring is the most efficient car in the executive estate car segment.

The silky smooth straight-six turbocharged engine of the 530d Touring ups the diesel ante. Now equipped with increased power of 245hp at 4,000rpm and with a peak torque of 540Nm from as low as 1,750rpm, the 530d Touring provides more of what enthusiastic customers love. With the introduction of upgraded piezo-injectors, the BMW 530d emits just 165g/km (with automatic transmission), while averaging a combined consumption figure of 44.8mpg. The BMW 530d is capable of accelerating from zero to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds and attaining an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

Joining the diesel-powered cars from launch are two straight-six petrol engines – the 523i and the 535i. The 535i is the first engine to combine a single turbocharged engine with High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC – BMW’s own system that controls how much the engine’s valves open for optimum efficiency. These measures allow the engine to meet strict emissions regulations whilst delivering optimum performance with a zero to 62mph time of 6.0 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Consumption and emissions figures reflect its technological prowess with 33.2mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 197g/km, both values using the more popular automatic transmission.

The naturally-aspirated 523i Touring has also utilises High Precision Direct Injection resulting in high-revving, responsive driving characteristics, combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. The 523i unit delivers maximum output of 204hp at 6,100 rpm and a peak torque of 270Nm from 1,500 all the way through to 4,250 rpm to ensure smooth progression at any speed. Its responsiveness translates into a zero to 62mph speed of 8.2 seconds with a top speed of 155mph*. Its economical nature delivers CO2 emissions of 183g/km and a combined consumption of 36.2mpg.

Efficient and Dynamic at no extra cost

The new BMW 5 Series Touring comes with a dazzling array of EfficientDynamics technologies. The BMW 520d Touring is the first 5 Series to come with Auto Start-Stop, reducing the engine idle period when coming to a short stop. All manual gearbox models come with an Optimum gearshift indicator to help drivers decide when to change gear to optimise the car’s efficiency.

Completing the panoply of BMW’s pioneering EfficientDynamics package are Brake Energy Regeneration, Active Aerodynamics, Low rolling resistance tyres, Electric Power Steering and lightweight engineering throughout the vehicle. High-precision direct fuel injection is also fitted on both petrol models.

Transmission

All BMW 5 Series Touring models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox which has been optimised compared to previous transmissions for greater efficiency. A redesigned gearshift lever and enhanced internal packaging have resulted in a smoother, sportier gearshift.

The option of BMW’s new eight-speed automatic transmission brings the luxury and refinement of the 7 Series to the new Touring range. While being six per cent more fuel efficient, the weight and size of the gearbox remain unchanged. Buyers of all variants can specify the eight-speed automatic gearbox or an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddles for those that prefer more enthusiastic style of driving.

For those BMW 5 Series Touring models specified with Variable Damper Control or Adaptive Drive packages, the Drive Dynamic Control (DDC) chassis configurator is fitted to enhance ride and handling still further. DDC allows for fine tuning of the chassis with the choice of Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Each mode changes the levels of steering assistance, throttle response, gear change characteristics, degree of Dynamic Stability Control interaction and, courtesy of adjustable dampers, the ride and handling characteristics.

Innovative new optional equipment

The BMW 5 Series Touring can be specified with Park Assist to enhance driver convenience. Once a button on the centre console is pressed ultrasound sensors located in the side indicator surrounds scan the road either side of the vehicle for an appropriate parking space. On location of a suitable free bay the driver then only need operate the accelerator and brake pedals while the Park Assist system swiftly slots the car into the space with ease.

Four-wheel Integral Active Steering can also be specified for the first time on a 5 Series Touring and a car equipped with it benefits from a turning circle reduced by half a metre. Meanwhile, the Surround View system uses cameras in the side mirrors and the front wheel arches in conjunction with Park Distance Control and the optional Reversing Assist camera to provide a 360 degree view on the iDrive display for perfect parking.

The BMW 5 Series Touring is offered with a wealth of optional equipment to enhance driver safety, comfort and enjoyment. Head-up Display, Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Speed Limit Info and two rear entertainment packages are all available.

In the UK the BMW 5 Series Touring will be offered with four optional equipment packages. BMW Business Advanced Media and BMW Professional Multimedia packages include BMW Navigation, BMW ConnectedDrive – Assist and Online and Voice control. The Dynamic package includes 19-inch alloy wheels, Sport seats, Anthracite headlining, Sport leather steering wheel and High-gloss exterior trim. The Visibility package includes Adaptive headlights, Xenon headlights, High-beam Assist and headlight wash.

The new 5 Series Touring goes on sale on 18 September, 2010.

The next generation Kia Magentis is set to make its world premiere next month at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.

“The next generation of Magentis possesses the power to surprise,” says Peter Schreyer, Kia’s Chief Design Officer. “It’s a car that people will simply not expect from Kia – and that’s exactly what we set out to achieve.”

The saloon exudes an athletic confidence from every angle – its raked roofline, high and pronounced shoulder line of its sculpted flanks and its extended wheelbase are complemented by flared wheelarches and a shallow glasshouse that create a saloon with a muscular, self-assured stance.

The striking visage of the car features a new interpretation of Kia’s bold ‘tiger’ family face that’s edged by piercing projector headlamps.

Following the theme of recent model revisions, new Magentis is longer, lower and wider than before, the Kia’s coupe-like profile is enhanced by the sweeping chrome arc that flows from A to C pillar, a distinctive design motif that visually lowers the car further still and enhances its cab-backwards proportions.

“For this car we started with a clean sheet and worked to achieve an exterior design with a European feeling and stance,” explains Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer, Kia Europe. To help achieve this, the exterior was designed by his team in Frankfurt. The interior was created by the design team in California.

The new D-segment offering is spacious, and with class-leading levels of safety and luxury equipment, the intelligently configured and driver-oriented cabin underlines a newfound poise and presence.

“This new model embodies Kia’s confident new design direction,” says Schreyer. “It’s a global car with individual appeal.”

The all-new Kia saloon will be launched in phases around the globe and will be seen in UK showrooms in 2011 – the model name will be confirmed closer to launch.

The Kia Motors press conference for the New York International Auto Show will take place on April 1, 2010 from 10:10 – 10:35 am (local time) at the Kia stand on Level 1 of the ‘Jacob Javits Center’ located between 34-39 Streets on 11th Avenue in New York City.

The Nissan Murano will be available with a new 2.5-litre dCi four-cylinder diesel engine in September, producing 190 PS and 450 Nm of torque

Since its European introduction in autumn 2008, the second generation Murano has occupied a unique place in the premium Crossover market – combining cutting edge design, a premium on-board ambiance and easy, enjoyable performance.

And Murano’s appeal to customers will be significantly enhanced in September with the addition of a diesel engine to the line-up, further reinforcing Nissan’s Crossover leadership. The introduction of the diesel version comes just as Nissan will introduce the fourth member of its Crossover line-up, the Juke, and soon after the introduction of the revised Qashqai.

An enhanced version of Nissan’s 2.5 dCi four cylinder engine, has been fitted to the Murano, giving a combination of effortless torque, refinement and reduced consumption and emissions, in line with the European market trend. This YD25 engine from Nissan’s range has recently benefitted from comprehensive upgrades in advance of its fitment in Murano.

When fitted to the Murano, the engine produces 190PS and 450Nm of torque, with a torque and power curve which means that the performance is smooth and serene thanks to the torquey nature of the engine, perfectly complementing the Murano’s character.

The changes made to the engine include a new direct injection system which operates at 2000 bar, up from 1800 bar. This increase in pressure means the fuel spray is atomised to an even finer degree resulting in more complete combustion. A new cylinder head with parallel ports increases the swirl efficiency of the combustion process, smoothing the intake and exhaust flow, while a new variable nozzle turbo (VNT) with electric control rather than the previous hydraulic system for quicker responses has also been adopted.

The engine is equipped with a diesel particle filter (DPF), helping Murano to achieve EURO5 emission standards.

Automatic Gearbox
The engine is offered as a single powertrain with a six-speed automatic gearbox, providing smooth, discreet gear-shifts to guarantee seamless, effortless progress. With a high degree of lock-up, engine responsiveness is keen and its shift logic has been programmed to make the most of the high-torque engine characteristics, but also to optimise the fuel economy.

Furthermore, the gearbox is equipped with ASC (Adaptive Shift Control), which will modify shift patterns according to the prevailing driving style, tailoring the gearbox to hold on to a lower gear during a descent for added engine braking, for example.

Power is transmitted to the road via Nissan’s advanced ALL MODE 4×4-i technology, which sends power to the rear-wheels when a loss of stability or traction is detected.

Cutting Edge Design
One of the key factors in the Murano’s appeal is its design – combining SUV attributes, with more dynamic qualities of a sporty sedan. The lower half of the exterior gives an SUV-like air of solidity and robustness, with pronounced wheelarches and a rippled effect at the bottom of the doors, giving a muscular appearance.

The upper half is more dynamic, thanks to its steeply raked windscreen and rising window line at the rear, which is Nissan’s signature Crossover styling feature.

Scratch Shield Paint
Murano is also equipped with Nissan’s innovative Scratch Shield paint.. It is a clearcoat that is more scratch resistant compared with conventional clearcoats, helping a vehicle maintain its new look for a longer period of time. The paint also repairs fine scratches, restoring a vehicle’s surface close to its original state. It works thanks to a special, highly elastic resin that has been combined with a conventional clearcoat to increase the paint’s flexibility. This has also increased its strength by raising the resin density. When the paint is scratched, over a period of several days the resin will return to its original form, thereby ‘healing’ itself and restoring the appearance of the paint to its original condition.

Business Class
Inside, a genuinely luxurious interior delivers a ‘Business Class’ experience. The instruments, seats, subtle ambient mood lighting and high quality materials – including double stitched leather trim and real aluminium touches – lift the interior from sporting SUV to luxury saloon standard.

In keeping with its enhanced sophistication, Murano is laden with features designed to make life on the move even more comfortable.

Among the standard features are the leather interior with aluminium accents in the cabin, satellite navigation with full colour 7 inch screen, Intelligent Key with Stop/Start button and full climate control with mild flow dissipation. The front seats are power operated – the driver’s seat has eight way control including power lumbar support.. The front and rear seats are heated.

Additionally, the tailgate can be opened and closed by remote control, while folding the rear seat back rests is a one-touch operation. The back rests can be raised remotely, too, via switches in the trunk area and on the dashboard.

Side and rear parking cameras
But perhaps the cleverest of all the new Murano’s features are the parking cameras. In addition to the now expected rear view camera, new Murano has another camera mounted within the passenger door mirror. The image transmitted to the dashboard screen will show the driver any obstacle otherwise hidden in a blind spot during parking manoeuvres.

Murano also comes with brushed chrome roof rail inserts, powered steering wheel adjustment (rake and reach), and memory function on Intelligent Key which governs the position of the driver’s seat, steering wheel and door mirrors.

Bluetooth connectivity
The leather-trimmed steering wheel incorporates switches for the audio system, telephone and cruise control. Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity is also standard meaning there are no phone compatibility problems as the technology is incorporated into virtually all recent handsets: there is no requirement for a phone to be inserted into a special dock before it can be used hands-free.

Bose® sound
Murano’s standard audio is a Bose® sound system that has been especially designed and customised for the acoustics of the cabin.

The result is a premium 11-speaker system with a 10-channel amplifier that helps recreate sound closer to a live performance.

The system is powered by a Bose® amplifier that includes custom equalization and proprietary digital signal processing. A pair of Bose Richbass™ woofers, mounted in the spare wheel well, allow listeners to enjoy music with depth and presence, but without sacrificing space in the passenger cabin.

Nearly all of the system’s 11-speakers use neodymium iron boron magnets in place of the more conventional ferrite magnets found in most speakers. These magnets are smaller and lighter than ferrite magnets but just as powerful. As a result, they help the system deliver a full rich sound while adding less weight to the vehicle. In addition, an innovative design approach, custom equalization and digital signal processing help reproduce music with clarity, spaciousness and realism. The audio system itself incorporates an in-dash six-disc CD player with AM/FM.

Other options
The only other options are metallic paint and a DVD-based entertainment system for the rear passengers, with screen incorporated into the roof.

“The introduction of the diesel to our Murano comes at a time when Nissan is reinforcing its leadership as the pioneering Crossover brand in the automotive industry. Murano was, of course, the first Crossover in our range and now that this second generation model has a diesel engine option, its appeal will be even wider on the European market,” said Simon Thomas, Nissan’s European Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing.

He added: “Additionally, deliveries of the newly revised Qashqai have just started and we’re hopeful we can build on its already huge European success – every year since its launch, Qashqai has surpassed our expectations and the factory in Sunderland, UK where it is built will soon go to a third shift to meet demand.”

“And Nissan’s Crossover line up will be complete in the autumn when the Juke, our new small Crossover, will go on sale. It will offer something new and more dynamic than the predictable options in the B-segment.”

The new Euro 5-ready 1.4-litre MultiAir engine, developed and patented by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), made its international debut in the MiTo late last year, and is initially offered in two turbocharged forms for the UK market. The 135bhp version of the unit powers the £15,165 Lusso and £16,135 Veloce, while the range-topping £17,895 Cloverleaf – an auspicious return for the iconic badge close to every Alfista’s heart – boasts 170bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 7.5 seconds, but a combined fuel consumption of 47.1 mpg.

In addition to MultiAir, the new MiTo range showcases a broad spectrum of innovative technologies, including active suspension on the Cloverleaf (a first for this class of car), the emission-reducing Start&Stop system across the range, and Alfa Romeo DNA. Derived from racing, this three-mode electronic system communicates with the engine, brakes, steering, suspension (on MiTo Cloverleaf), and transmission, allowing the driver to adjust the responses of the car to suit driving style and road conditions.

Alfa’s Electronic Q2 limited slip differential heads a number of dynamic driver aids, including a long list of safety systems. Together with the MacPherson strut/torsion beam suspension layout, these all help deliver the handling dynamics and sure-footed road holding capabilities you’d expect from an Alfa, whatever the road. Designed to satisfy the highest Euro NCAP crash safety rating, the MiTo also offers optimum passive safety.

The model’s high level of engineering integrity can also be appreciated through the series of improvements that have further increased the quality of the Alfa MiTo. Improvements embrace the interior finish, trim combinations, and gearchange quality (the lever on the MiTo Cloverleaf has been shortened by 2.5 centimetres) as well as modifications to the steering, suspension and braking systems.

WHY MULTIAIR?

The Holy Grail for any engineering endeavour is to have your cake and eat it – to unify seemingly incompatible goals. For the Fiat Group’s engine designers, FPT, the quest has been clear cut: how to deliver high performance and driveablity while, at the same time, significantly reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

The key to achieving this is well understood. It requires taking more precise control of the quantity and characteristics of the air drawn into the cylinders in the combustion cycle. There are numerous electro-mechanical variable valve timing systems in production today that seek to achieve this. But because they usually have only two operating regimes, they are severely limited by the degree of flexibility they can exercise in the valve opening schedules.

MultiAir eliminates these compromises by metering the direct air charge at the cylinder inlet ports with an advanced electro-hydraulic actuation and control system that has no fewer than five basic parameters, and the ability to optimally adjust valve timing and lift between them to exactly suit different engine speeds and loads, ensuring strong low- and mid-range torque and vigorous top-end power, combined with good economy and low emissions.

This is a transformational technology comparable to the introduction of FPT’s common rail fueling for diesels, but the principles behind it are as simple as they are ingenious. MultiAir engines have just one camshaft with three lobes allocated to each cylinder. The first two control the two exhaust valves in the conventional way, while the third defines the maximum possible lift and opening duration of the two inlet valves. It also acts on a small piston that sends engine oil, via pressurised hydraulic channels, to additional pistons located just above the inlet valves.

Four solenoid valves – one for each cylinder under individual control from the Magneti Marelli ECU engine management system – can be opened at any point during the inlet valve’s movement to bleed off the oil. Varying the oil flow instantly and precisely controls the opening and closing of the valves between the parameter extremes mechanically described by the camshaft lobe for optimum results.

MultiAir can even open the inlet valve twice in one intake stroke, when running at low speeds and loads around town, to create more swirl of the intake mixture, enabling it to burn more completely.

MultiAir strategies

When the solenoid valve is closed, the oil in the hydraulic chamber behaves like a solid body and acts on the intake valves in accordance with the profile of the cam lobe.

When the solenoid valve is open, the hydraulic chamber and the intake valves are de-coupled; the valves no longer follow the cam profile.

By controlling the solenoid closing period, various optimal intake valve opening schedules can be realised.

MULTIAIR IN ACTION

Different strategies can be employed to optimise combustion efficiency, according to varying driving situations -

FULL LIFT – for maximum power, the Solenoid Valve is always closed and full valve opening is achieved by completely following the mechanical cam, which was specifically designed to maximise power at high engine speed; i.e: motorway driving.

EIVC (Early Intake Valve Closing)- for low-rpm torque, the Solenoid Valve is opened near the end of the cam profile, leading to early intake valve closing. This eliminates unwanted backflow into the manifold and maximises the air mass trapped in the cylinders; i.e: during acceleration.

LIVO (Late Intake Valve Opening) – in engine part-load, the Solenoid Valve is opened earlier causing partial valve openings to control the trapped air mass as a function of the required torque.

PARTIAL LOAD – the intake valves can be partially opened by closing the Solenoid Valve once the mechanical cam action has already started. In this case the air stream into the cylinder is faster and results in higher in-cylinder turbulence; i.e: at engine start up or idling.

MULTI-LIFT – Multiple opening strategies are used to enhance turbulence and combustion rate at very low loads. The advantage is a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions in the urban cycle; i.e: city driving.

MultiAir makes the difference: 1.4 TB MultiAir 135bhp compared to the 1.4 TB 120bhp

CO2 reduced by over 10%

Max power increased by 12.5%

Acceleration (0-62mph) reduced by up 0.4 seconds

Better throttle response, less turbo lag

Fuel consumption reduced by up to 10%

THE NEXT GENERATION – MULTIAIR ENGINES

The MiTo’s new range of MultiAir engines are based on the Fiat Group’s established 1.4-litre ‘FIRE’ block. The MultiAir top-end is modular and designed to be fitted to existing engines. From launch, the engine has been available with three power outputs, starting with the 105bhp non-turbo unit. For the UK market, however, the choice for Alfa Romeo customers is between the two turbocharged versions.

Striking an unbeatable balance between spirited, sporty performance and fine economy, the 135bhp version of this engine that powers the MiTo Lusso and Veloce is outstandingly flexible and responsive and pulls vigorously from low engine speeds, posting a class-leading 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 129mph. This excellent performance dovetails perfectly with respect for the environment, reflected in CO2 emissions of just 129 g/km and a combined fuel consumption of 50.4 mpg.

The 170bhp MultiAir powerplant fitted exclusively to the range-topping Cloverleaf is even more exceptional, with a specific power output of 124bhp/litre which is not only a first for this class of car but also the highest value ever recorded for a production Alfa. Combined with a new fast-shifting, short-travel six-speed gearbox, the Cloverleaf’s powertrain exemplifies the philosophy of downsizing: producing hi-tech turbocharged engines to increase performance while slashing fuel consumption and emissions. The results achieved by this strategy are impressive by any standard. A CO2 figure of 139 g/km and 59mpg over the extra-urban cycle are closer to what you might expect from a small city car than a sporty hatchback capable of sprinting from 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds and powering on to 136mph.

This MiTo Cloverleaf MultiAir’s 170bhp engine gives it a class-leading power/weight ratio of 6.7 kg/hp which is almost 10% better than the already excellent performance of the current 155 bhp 1.4 TB. Peak power of 170bhp is developed at 5,500rpm, and is supported by up to 184lb.ft of torque at 2,500rpm, delivering 47.1mpg on the combined cycle.

These statistics are particularly significant because they prove the effectiveness of downsizing to produce high-tech engines with better performance allied to sharp reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, giving the MiTo Cloverleaf an unbeatable performance/consumption ratio.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

Key to the sporting handling and ride characteristics of the MiTo is its suspension layout: MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent layout with torsion beam at the rear. To emphasise the promptness of response, stability and control, even under extreme conditions, MiTo’s track widths are among the widest in the segment – 1483mm front and 1475mm rear. The wheel rims are also wide in relation to the size of the tyres in order to optimise the latter’s handling performance. The MiTo also has a sporting yet pliant ride, and the torsion beam features high torsional stiffness to enable it to also act as an anti-roll bar, thereby ensuring optimum roll performance and helping maximise the promptness of response.

The most distinctive feature of the MiTo’s suspension is that the front and rear dampers feature coilover springs fitted inside the damper that act in parallel with the main spring during extension travel, with the main purpose of reducing roll and increasing chassis response. Special dual-acting telescopic hydraulic dampers are fitted as standard on all versions.

DNA

The MiTo’s innovative DNA system offers three distinct ‘vehicle personalities’ tailored to driving style and the prevailing road characteristics and conditions: Dynamic (sporting), Normal (suburban/town driving) and All weather (maximum safety, especially in low-grip conditions). A three-position switch, situated beside the gearlever, alters the throttle response and steering set-up for the different driving environments. In Dynamic mode, the throttle response is quicker, the steering is sharper and the handling is more direct. For icy and loose surface environments the All Weather mode provides a more gentle response.

VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) is Alfa Romeo’s version of ESP (Electronic Stability Program), a system that activates under extreme conditions when vehicle stability is at risk, helping the driver to control the car. Permanently engaged, VDC allows the driver the full satisfaction of controlling the car as long as conditions are normal, but cuts in just before a situation becomes critical.

ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) is an integral part of the VDC and optimises traction at any speed with the aid of the brakes and throttle. The system computes the degree of slip on the basis of wheel revolutions calculated by the ABS sensors, and activates two different control systems to restore grip.

CBC (Cornering Brake Control) comes into play when the car takes a corner while under heavy braking. In this case, brake pressure is discharged on each wheel individually to maintain vehicle stability, minimising any understeer or oversteer behaviour.

DST (Dynamic Steering Torque) improves both driving safety and handling performance through continuous interaction between the electric power steering (which generates torque at the steering wheel) and electronic control of dynamics (VDC). In detail, DST automatically makes corrections, helps to maintain vehicle control and ensures that the VDC activates unobtrusively.

Electronic Q2 improves the transfer of drive torque to the wheels and, in particular, guarantees excellent cornering behaviour, thus making the car safer and more entertaining during a sporty drive or when grip is poor. When accelerating in a bend, the front braking system acts on the inner wheel to increase traction on the outer wheel (bearing the highest load), and therefore distributes torque between the front driven wheels in a continuous, dynamic manner according to driving and road surface conditions.

START&STOP

The MiTo’s Start&Stop technology makes its debut combined with MultiAir engines for the first time on an Alfa Romeo. The system turns off the engine whenever the vehicle is stationary and idling in neutral, then restarts it automatically when the clutch is depressed. Start&Stop can be deactivated at will by the driver but, when active, achieves notable reductions in fuel consumption, emissions and noise pollution.

GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR – GSI

The Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) linked to Start&Stop discreetly suggests to the driver when to change gear – leading to more efficient use of the engine in terms of fuel consumption. The indicator is located on the control panel and is active in Normal and All Weather DNA settings. This device promotes improved gear selection resulting in improved driving performance and engine efficiency.

NEW AUTOMATIC GEARBOX TECHNOLOGY – ALFA TCT

From spring 2010, the 135bhp engine of the MiTo Lusso and Veloce will be available with Alfa Twin Clutch Technology (ALFA TCT), a dual dry clutch gearbox that has no clutch pedal and uses sophisticated electronics and hydraulics to control the clutches. In operation it can be used like a conventional automatic or controlled manually via a shift lever or steering wheel paddles.

The clutches operate independently. One clutch controls the ‘odd’ gears (1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse) while the other controls the ‘even’ gears (2nd, 4th and 6th). This means that the gears can be changed without interrupting the power flow from the engine to the transmission, resulting in increased shift speeds with no loss of power, reduced driver fatigue in heavy traffic, and an improvement in economy because no power is wasted between shifts.

In addition, torque power is increased by over 10% with the ALFA TCT to 230Nm compared to 206Nm with the standard manual gearbox.

POWER AND PASSION – THE CLOVERLEAF RETURNS

The ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ (Cloverleaf) is an iconic symbol dear to Alfa aficionados that evokes the history of a brand with a rich racing and motorsport heritage. Appropriately, it finds its new home with the fastest and most powerful MiTo, the 170bhp MultiAir Cloverleaf.

This is the MiTo MultiAir that most dramatically illustrates the power of innovative solutions to reconcile high performance and driving pleasure with economy and a low impact on the environment – 139g/km of CO2. It’s all the more remarkable when you consider that the MiTo MultiAir Cloverleaf is powered by an engine with one of the highest specific outputs in the segment and a chassis equipped with features hitherto unthinkable for a car in this class.

A new active suspension system controls the dampers to redefine the vehicle’s dynamic capabilities under all driving conditions and raises standards of safety, comfort and handling to new levels. The system, developed as a joint venture between Alfa Romeo and Magneti Marelli, draws on the extraordinary experience both companies have accrued in motorsport throughout the world.

The MiTo Cloverleaf’s visual cues are subtle, incorporating green carbonfibre-style cloverleaf badges and exclusive 17″ darkened alloy wheels reminiscent of those fitted to the Alfa 8C Competizione. Among the things you can’t see are the new adaptive dampers and a new six-speed gearbox.

NEW SIX-SPEED GEARBOX

The technological qualities of the Alfa MiTo Cloverleaf’s engine are fully exploited by the next-generation C635 six-speed gearbox. Developed by FPT and manufactured at the Verrone factory in Italy, this groundbreaking mechanical unit is the first result of a design philosophy aimed at improving drivability, consumption levels and production flexibility.

The new gearbox ensures clean and swift shifts with a very short action, even weightings, and superb noise and vibration suppression. In addition, modern design and construction techniques help to significantly reduce consumption levels thanks to less friction and optimum gear ratios. Its debut in the Alfa MiTo 170 bhp 1.4 MultiAir TB marks the debut of a modern family of gearboxes adapted for a broad range of models.

ACTIVE SUSPENSION

Motor sport has always been a testing ground for new technologies, which have found their way from the world’s most famous racetracks to standard road cars. One example of this transfer between two seemingly very different worlds is dynamic adaptive suspension. This system, which actively and continuously controls the electronic dampers, was developed by combining Alfa Romeo development testing at the historic Balocco test track and the Nürburgring, with the latest engineering techniques from Magneti Marelli.

The MiTo Cloverleaf is the first vehicle in this sector to have active suspension as standard. Using five independent accelerometer sensors located on the front two shock absorbers, rear centre and rear bulkheads, the adaptive damping system continuously monitors and controls the car’s dampers, helping to contain both lateral body roll and longitudinal movement.

Each shock absorber works independently of the others, stiffening when required by an electronic signal that moves oil into a chamber of the absorber or removes oil from the chamber for softened suspension (on/off system). The four electronically controlled dampers, five accelerometric sensors and an electronic control unit interface with the MiTo’s other on-board electronic systems to continuously monitor the road conditions and adjust the suspensions settings to give optimum performance and ride.

The suspension interacts with the three different control strategies of the Alfa DNA. system, enhancing ride comfort in ‘Normal’ mode, increasing safety and security in the ‘All weather’ setting by continuously interacting with the VDC system, steering and suspension, and sharpening responsiveness and agility with it switched to ‘Dynamic’.

To sum up, the Dynamic Suspension system effectively optimises comfort and handling by adapting suspension behaviour in accordance with the road surface and driver input. The system achieves this by altering the load distribution of the four dampers to enhance handling and grip. Moreover, the system manages longitudinal dynamic control by adjusting the movement of the chassis during acceleration, braking and gear changes, and by integrating with the VDC, steering and braking systems.

MITO MULTIAIR RANGE

Although the entry-level Turismo versions continue in the MiTo line-up, the MultiAir-engined versions come to the UK as the Lusso, Veloce and Cloverleaf. Building on the Turismo’s long and comprehensive specification list – which includes DNA, Electronic Q2, VDC and electric power-assisted steering – the Lusso, Veloce and Cloverleaf have distinctive identities of their own.

LUSSO

From the outside, Lusso versions can be distinguished from Turismo by their 16” sports alloy wheel, fog lights, lucid chrome finish headlight surrounds, chrome-effect window sills and chrome exhaust pipes. Stepping over the kick plates, the interior of Lusso models features a choice of three different interior colour combinations. Competizione Blue, Red or Black dashboards can be complemented by the inclusion of different leather and cloth seat colour combinations. All Lusso models come with lumbar adjustment on the driver’s side. A leather steering wheel and gear knob with steering wheel mounted audio controls complete the look.

VELOCE

Veloce versions of the Alfa MiTo are fitted with 17” exclusive design alloy wheels – similar to those that appear on the stunning Alfa 8C Competizione – along with satin effect headlight surrounds and wing mirror covers. The performance focus is further resolved with a rear spoiler and diffuser-style rear bumper. Veloce versions also sport red painted brake callipers. Inside the cabin, the Veloce features the same dashboard options as the Lusso version, but with an upgraded Veloce sports cloth, front armrest with storage compartment and sports dials with white illumination. All Veloce models come with the Blue&Me™ hands-free system with voice recognition, and media player with USB port.

CLOVERLEAF

The MiTo Cloverleaf’s 17″ Cloverleaf design alloy wheels are based on those of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione supercar. Other subtle signifiers for the fastest MiTo include an SDC active suspension system which works in conjunction with Alfa Romeo DNA, Cloverleaf badges, matching colours for the headlight frames and wing mirror covers in brushed titanium effect, while the dark finish of the headlight parabolas is achieved by a brand new metal sublimation technology. The interior also has a refined sporty feel thanks to the all-black surfaces that ensure no reflections or distractions while driving. The technological aspect of this car is further enhanced by the sporty fabric used to upholster the seats, the modern dashboard and the white lighting on the instrument panel.

OPTIONS & PERSONALISATION

A comprehensive list of options, including roof and side graphics, is also available; (see technical and specification table). And with 10 body colours and a variety of surrounds for the headlights & wing-mirror covers, every MiTo can be tailored to the driver’s individual tastes. The MiTo’s customisable headlight frames, for example, are available in Titanium Grey, Lucid Chrome, Satin Effect, Opaque Black or body colour.

DESIGN

Inspired by the Alfa 8C Competizione and designed to appeal to a young, image-conscious audience, the MiTo is available only as a 3-door hatchback, and is styled to match its description as the sportiest compact car on the market today.

From all angles, the MiTo manages to blend its sports credentials with quintessential Alfa Romeo style and sophistication to create a compact car that fully expresses the vitality and emotion of the brand.

In profile, the high waistline, flared wheel arches, disguised B-pillar and minimal rear overhang combine to communicate power, performance and agility. The hatchback rear of the vehicle features LED (light-emitting diode) lights which are brighter, faster responding and thus safer. These lights can be ordered with a choice of coloured surrounds.

INTERIORS

The MiTo’s interior has an imposing, hi-tech appearance and is equipped with a superbly designed instrument panel featuring an advanced graphics display. The high quality of the interior feels like that of a car from a class above, with its unique carbon fibre-look facia. The instrument display’s sporty analogue dials are hooded and the central console has a satin trim finish.

Careful soundproofing helps create a quiet and refined environment that optimises the inclusion of a Bose® sound system and integrated Blue&Me™ with satellite navigation on certain versions.

EQUIPMENT

The MiTo is equipped with Blue&Me™ technology as standard on Veloce and Cloverleaf trims (and is optional on the Lusso) enabling drivers to use a mobile phone and listen to music from an MP3 player or USB stick, without needing to take their hands off the steering wheel. And for optimum in-car sound quality, the MiTo boasts the option of the latest generation Bose® hi-fi sound system.

SAFETY TECHNOLOGY

Designed and developed to achieve the highest possible scores in passive and active crash safety tests, the Alfa MiTo is one of the safest cars on the road, providing driver and passengers with a high level of protection. In recognition of its safety credentials, the Alfa MiTo has already collected a 5-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating.

Driver and occupant safety is paramount, and the specification of seven airbags including front airbags, window bags, sidebags and driver’s kneebag work with Alfa Romeo’s Self Aligning Head Restraint – a system that moves the head restraints closer to the neck of the front seat occupants to lessen the effect of whiplash in the event of an impact – is evidence of Alfa Romeo’s commitment to the highest possible safety standards. This extends to small, often overlooked, details. With the MiTo’s SBR (Seat Belt Reminder) technology, four/five icons displayed on a small screen inform the driver whether the seat belts of all the passengers are securely fastened.

In addition, the body, bonnet, doors and dashboard crossmember, along with the seats and steering column, have been designed with a view to absorbing impact energy progressively and limiting their intrusion on the driver and passengers. And during emergency braking, the MiTo automatically operates its hazard lights to alert other road users.

Inspired by the high-performance IS F, the IS range has been extended with a new F-Sport grade for 2010

Sharper looks and new high-tech on-board features are central to Lexus’s revision of its best-selling IS sports saloon for 2010.

Inspired by the ultra-high-performance IS F, the IS range has been extended with a new F-Sport grade that focuses on highly desirable sports styling features.

New F-Sport grade

The new F-Sport grade, available for both IS 250 and 220d models, takes its cue from the high impact styling of the IS F and is positioned in the IS line-up between the established SE-I and SE-L models.

The dedicated F-Sport exterior features include lowered suspension (IS 250 only), exclusive 18-inch wheels and an IS F-style front grille and rear bootlid spoiler. In the cabin there are aluminium sports pedals, IS F-style sports seats, steering wheel and (on the IS 250 automatic) gear lever. The seats are finished in a combination of Alcantara upholstery with leather side bolsters.

A black-on-black interior colour scheme is complimented by a black headlining and grey stitching detail on the front seats and steering wheel.

F-Sport models share a number of premium equipment features with SE-L grade, including rain-sensing wipers, HID headlights with AFS, 13-speaker audio system and memory settings for the front seats and door mirrors.

Navigation and audio systems

Lexus has developed one of the most accurate and fast-responding navigation systems on the market. Using a 40GB hard disc drive (HDD), it provides Europe-wide coverage and is able to gather live local traffic intelligence in each country to help plot the most efficient route, wherever you may be.

A further benefit of the HDD system is its “sound library” function. Up to 10GB of disc space is available for owners to store audio tracks from CD – room enough for about 2,000 songs.

The touch-screen, full-map system is available as an option on SE and SE-I models as part of package that also includes a rear park assist monitor.

For F-Sport and SE-L versions of IS, it is included in the optional Multimedia Package, together with a 14-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System and the rear park assist monitor.

All Lexus IS audio systems can be upgraded to receive DAB digital broadcasts and are equipped as standard with USB and audio jack plug connection for fully controlled use of portable music players, and Bluetooth with an audio streaming function.

The Mark Levinson audio package now features a “sound library” function, using the navigation system’s HDD to transfer and store music files from CD up to 10GB capacity.

Larger wheels for SE grade

Lexus IS 250 SE and 220d SE have been given more street appeal for 2010 with 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard, in place of the previous 16-inch rims.

Improved fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions

The revisions made to the IS 250 for the 2010 model year have yielded improvements in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. With manual transmission, combined cycle economy is now 29.1mpg, compared to 28.8mpg for the 2009 model; the new figure for the automatic is 31.7mpg (from 31.0mpg). CO2 emissions have fallen from 231 to 227g/km for the manual and 214 to 209g/km for the automatic.

Lexus IS prices

IS 220d SE: £24,350

Toyota’s RAV4 gets a fresh new look for 2010, with a redesign that blends contemporary urban style with the durability for which Europe’s original recreational compact SUV is renowned.

Unveiled this week at the Geneva motor show, the 2010 RAV4 has an all-new front-end treatment that not only looks good, but is also more aerodynamically efficient. A wider grille, with horizontal bars and chrome accents displays the new Toyota family look that has been established on the latest Avensis, Verso and Auris models. The grille is flanked by new headlights, with projector-type low beam lamps.

A new flowing bonnet design helps to emphasise RAV4’s wide track and dynamic appearance, qualities that are further expressed in a new full-width front bumper. Further chrome detailing around the foglamps and bonnet moulding add an extra dash of premium appeal.

Inside the cabin the high quality finish is complemented by new leather and Alcantara upholstery.

In the UK the 2010 RAV4 will carry forward its Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains, with 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol and 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT diesel engines, with six-speed manual, Mutridrive S (Toyota’s advanced continuously variable transmission) and six-speed automatic transmissions.
Audi presented the A8 hybrid concept at the Geneva Show - its two engines - a 2.0 TFSI and an electric power unit - develop a combined 245PS and 480 Nm

Audi presents the A8 hybrid as a technology concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Its two engines – a 2.0 TFSI and an electric power unit – develop a combined total of 245PS and deliver 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) of torque, enabling them to provide the confident driving performance of a large six-cylinder engine. And combined with the advantages of electric power, the consistent downsizing also pays substantial benefits in fuel economy – up to 45.6mpg is possible, corresponding to a CO2 value of 144 grams per km.

The Audi A8 hybrid utilizes a parallel hybrid system – a highly efficient principle that avoids any unnecessary friction and power losses. Interposed between the four-cylinder petrol engine, which delivers 211PS, and the eight-speed tiptronic is a powerful electric motor. It develops 45PS of power and a very ample 211 Nm (155.63 lb-ft) of torque. The two power units together develop a system power of 180 kW and 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft). This enables the Audi A8 hybrid to accelerate in 7.6 seconds from zero to 62mph and to achieve a top speed of 146mph.

The A8 concept car is a full hybrid. This means that it can be propelled by either the gasoline engine or the electric motor alone – or by the combined power of both. During coasting or braking, the electric motor acts as a generator that converts kinetic into electric energy and recharges the battery. The hybrid drive can propel the car on electric power alone at up to 40mph with a range of over two kilometers – enough for urban stop-and-go traffic.

The efficiency standard – the Audi A8 hybrid

Power like a big V6, fuel economy like a modest four-cylinder unit – Audi presents the A8 hybrid as a technology concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Its two propulsion units – a 2.0 TFSI and an electric motor – develop a total output of 245PS of system power and 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the Audi A8 hybrid to accelerate in 7.6 seconds from zero to 62mph and to achieve a top speed of 146mph. Yet average economy amounts to up to 45.6mpg – the CO2 equivalent is 144 grams per km.

The technology of the Audi A8 hybrid

The combustion engine of the Audi A8 hybrid is the 2.0 TFSI – a high-tech powerplant. This four-cylinder unit, which has been named “Engine of the Year” five times in a row since 2005, is an example of Audi’s downsizing philosophy. It combines direct fuel injection with turbocharging and the AVS Audi valvelift system, which regulates the valve lift in two stages. In combination with the adjustable intake camshaft, the Audi valvelift system improves cylinder charging and ensures spontaneous and powerful torque build-up. The 2.0 TFSI delivers 211PS and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft); the torque value remains constant from 1,500 to 4,200 rpm.

In the crankcase of the four-cylinder unit, which has a displacement of 1,984 cc, two balancer shafts offset second-order inertial forces to ensure virtually vibration-free and pleasantly quiet operation that goes well with the luxurious character of the A8. All components are optimized to minimize friction. The flow-rate-regulated, pressure-controlled oil pump further reduces fuel consumption.

Electric motor with ample propulsive power

A hydraulically operated wet clutch links the 2.0 TFSI with the electric motor. Its control requires the utmost precision, and a great deal of know-how has been expended to achieve its smooth, precise and swift operation. The synchronous motor, which is continually excited, also serves as a generator that develops 45PS of power and 211 Nm (155.63 lb-ft) of torque. Its full power is available practically right from standstill and contributes to a sportily powerful start-up. Since an electric motor also develops heat, its housing is furnished with cooling ducts. Interposed between the electric motor and the wheelset of the eight-speed tiptronic, which is controlled entirely by electronics, is an additional cut-out clutch. In conjunction with the electric unit, this functions as a torque converter. The propulsive power of both drive systems is applied to the road through the front wheels.

Lithium-ion technology – the battery

The energy storage system of the Audi A8 hybrid is mounted in the rear section. This state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery is more compact and weighs less than other types but is substantially more powerful. It is protected by a high-strength housing, and a ventilation module ensures that it always operated within the ideal temperature range. Yet the A8 hybrid also provides ample luggage space of 400 litres (14.13 cubic feet)

Several subsystems that operate on engine power in a conventional car have been modified right from the start for use in the Audi A8 hybrid. The compressor in the climate control system runs entirely on electric power. The steering system is electromechanical as well. The brake booster too is supplied by a demand-controlled electric vacuum pump. During electrical – i.e. recuperative – braking actions, a sophisticated control system ensures that the ABS and ESP functions operate properly.

The power electronics unit manages the interaction of the systems. Its pulse control inverter regulates the interplay of the battery and the electric motor. The DC-DC converter supplies power to users on the onboard network. The power electronics unit, which is connected to the battery and the electric motor by high-voltage cables, is located in the engine compartment.

The smooth interaction of these components and their high level of integration attest to the specialized know-how Audi has accumulated. The technology architecture already provides a glimpse of a future production model – the Audi Q5 hybrid, which will be introduced later this year.

Driving experience

The Audi A8 hybrid, which weighs 1,885 kilograms (4,155.71 lb), drives as if it had a big six-cylinder gasoline engine or a TDI under its bonnet. From zero to 62mph the vehicle accelerates in 7.6 seconds, and it can continue to accelerate up to 146mph. Yet fuel economy of up to 45.6mpg is possible, corresponding to 144 grams CO2/km (231.75 g/mile). In city traffic, the hybrid drive uses about 20 percent less fuel than a conventional drive. Both the car’s performance and its fuel economy benefit substantially from a major advantage of the A8 model series – its lightweight aluminum body based on the Audi Space Frame principle (ASF).

The hybrid drive is designed for fully electric-powered driving up to 40mph and for a distance exceeding two kilometers – especially well-suited for driving in the city or residential suburbs. When conditions permit, the driver can also select the electric mode by actuating a separate e-key in the cockpit. Both the display screen of the instrument cluster and the large monitor of the MMI operating system on the dashboard present all momentary power flows in brilliant graphics.

When the Audi A8 hybrid starts moving, both of its engines interoperate closely to suit varying power demands. Above 40mph the combustion engine alone does all the propulsive work, while the electric motor supplies onboard users and recharges the battery.

When the driver lets up on the gas, the combustion engine is disconnected from the drivetrain, so the Audi A8 hybrid ”coasts”. In braking and slow-down phases, the e-motor functions as a generator – recuperating energy efficiently and feeding it into the battery.

When the driver floors the pedal, the engine management temporarily controls the entire system power, and now the electric motor is boosting power. 245PS and 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) endow the big saloon with enormous thrust. The intermediate sprint between 37mph and 75mph in fifth gear for instance is accomplished in 7.5 seconds. The Audi A8 hybrid is an extremely dynamic car – with a fuel efficiency that is setting new standards. This is especially true in everyday user activities. Even its looks betray the power of this near-production concept car with its big 21-inch wheels and their 265/35 tyres.

The design of the Audi A8 hybrid

This near-production concept car has 21-inch, two-colour wheel rims styled with highly three-dimensional surface areas. The exterior paint job of the A8 hybrid is in “Prism Silver” with “Spectra Flair” as an accent colour – a rainbow effect that’s accentuated in reflected light along creases and seams on the body. The prominently located “hybrid” lettering on both front wings leaves no doubt about what kind of car this is. The accentuation of its width by a prominent low horizontal spoiler edge and a chrome strip conveys the vehicle’s solid stance on the road.

The engine compartment cover with its high-gloss finish and the glass cover of the battery in the boot also provide visual links to hybrid technology. And the illuminated doorsteps bear the “hybrid” insignia as an elegant touch to underscore the electric aspect whenever the doors are opened – using LED technology to minimize energy consumption.

The passengers also see the prominent hybrid logo displayed on the dashboard. The “Powermeter” in addition shows the energy flow in the instrument cluster.
